Oil leak

Post by AshishNJ »

Bike has about 1000 miles after complete rebuild. No issues whatsoever
Went for a 100 mile trip last week and on the way stopped for lunch . I could see the smoke from near the pipes and upon close inspection, leak was evident. Small drops from where head meats lower engine block.
I am wondering if there is an easy was to address it or I am looking at un assembly

Are you sure the leak isn't a bit further up in the engine at the cam chain adjuster bolt?

It did not seem like it . I will have to check more closely. Hopefully that is the case. If not , I am assuming that I will need a gasket replacement ?

There is a 90% chance it is not the base gasket. You will have to look it over very carefully to see where it is actually coming from. Steve is likely correct - the cam chain adjuster bolt is by far the most common leak, but it could be oil running down a stud and showing up there.

Changing the base gasket is no small job.

If I remember correctly (that's a big if for me!) there is a rubber plug in that cam chain adjuster. It will leak, often, with old age. (Beginning to sound like a theme for me!) Anyhow, look closely for that. Can be a bit tricky to notice it. Leaves such a light film coming down the block until it gathers in a little drop at the bottom. Look at Partzilla, or others. It's in the cam chain tensioner micro-fiche. #18 approx. $5. Good luck.

. I was able to pinpoint where oil is coming from. It is the bottom of the stud on the 6th cylinder . The one that is towards carbs. Unfortunately it is not at cylinder head but is where the crankcase meets the cylinders. I am guessing that would mean pulling apart entire top end ?

Do you mean at the seam in the block/case or from out of the exposed area of the stud?

Out of exposed area where stud comes out. For now , I pulled this stud and put it back with high temp thread sealent. Will know how it goes . I am wondering where does the oil rise from on to the stud. To my understanding there is no through hole for this stud

No, that stud has a blind thread, but some of these castings are very porous and oil can still migrate out the threads.
