I would agree, the craftmaship is indeed stunning - to an extend. What's more stunning to me, however, is the absolute waste of talent, time and money to come up with an end product like this. The guy should have spent his time on a Harley conversion. I always wonder, why people put single sided swingarms, upside-down forks and six piston calipers in bikes that by design do not turn, handle and consequently are not being ridden fast enough to have to stop.....

for the same reason why some put extended swingarm on Hayabusa , or big block V8 with blower on hot rods... because it looks cool, simple

Not so sure, JP. An extended swingarm on a Hayabusa may serve a purpose: Straight line stability for a fast ¼ mile run. Same may be true for the blown V8 in a hot rod.CBXTRA6 wrote:

And "looking cool" is very subjective. Definitely not that simple.

I think it's just part of the culture especially since you can get so many updated parts for dirt cheap anymore. Some people just like to be different and aren't really building their CBX to satisfy anyone else's tastes and could care less of someone's opinion. It's more of a personnel gratification from building something from their own minds eye, hell how many pages is bikeymikes thread up to? I can only look at so many stock CBXs before boredom sets in, yawn.

I realize, that there a many ways to improve on the original. Sensible improvements.
Especially when you really ride the bike more often.
But I would only pay top dollar for an unmolested original.
Not one that has been modified - even into a superior bike.
I guess, I look at the CBX as a true classic, more removed from a daily rider than, let's say, a VF1000R, for example. Not a museum piece, don't get me wrong, I want to ride the bike, but I don't have the goal to keep up with the squids on their R1s, GSX-Rs and CBRRs.
Would anybody consider that a modified, 1973 Kawasaki Z1 would be more desirable than a pristine original??
For many of the guys who have been part of the CBX community for a long time, the bike did lose some of its appeal over the years. That's why they did other things with it. They started bolting CB1100F parts on them to improve the handling. Then they Turbo-charged them to increase performance. Finally came USD forks, single sided swingarms and Ducati tailpieces.
There will be a time in the future, where bikes like this are offered for sale and people will say "OMG, he butchered that CBX!"
Look at the Kawasaki H2s. Anybody picks an extended swingarm, wheelie-bar, expansion chamber-bike over a stock 1972?

People who customize a CBX to this extent aren't concerned about the classic aspect of the bike, to reiterate what I said before it's more of a exercise in fabrication and the effort it takes to make something different from the norm.
Not everyone is concerned about the monetary loss they may experience from such a transformation, it's more about the satisfaction they receive from reworking something with their on talents and putting their personal stamp on it.
I guess I'm the polar opposite of you, stock CBX's bore me to tears, if I feel the need to see one for the millionth time I'll go to a museum or open up my CBX book.

I see what you mean, Jeff, as far as the work that people produce and why. I guess the challenge to fabricate and customize is appealing and keeps them going.
As far as our different position towards original CBXes is concerned, I think that's how it should be. If we all like the same stuff, it would just get too expensive.

Perhaps the builder of this bike had a vision of the finished product, and just needed a donor engine worthy of being showcased by his work? Sure looks better than another V-Twin clone chopper.

IMO it is awesome that they still inspire such passion, 30 years after the last one was new.

For what it is worth my view is if it has a CBX engine it is a CBX. I enjoy my standard 79 but have also owned several specials including five Moto-Martins and I enjoyed them all over the last thirty years.

I guess, this qualifies as a CBX also, then. For anyone who is interested, it may be worthwhile confirming the year. The VIN number he is listing is a 1980 number.For what it is worth my view is if it has a CBX engine it is a CBX.
Probably an oversight, as it is the same number as the other 1980 he has for sale.
