Hi Isaac,
Sure is me, I sell my range of seven different cbx pin badges around the world. The badges I designed myself and obtained Honda's and ICOA'S permission way back in 1995 as I used pictures from various cbx catalogues and in particular the front view of the 79/80 which no other seller produces or sells. Honda keep a set of the badges at the Collection Hall at Motegi,Japan so I cannot ask for more than that! Many thanks for buying one. I sold quite a few to guys over the USA when I was over for the Deals Gap rally in 1997.I also do a set of five exclusive cbx postcards of cbx specials. Sold several badges to Australian cbx enthusiasts like yourself over in Australia recently. ps you must have got it via Steve Newton from Gruyere?

All the best Mel

Ok i got some numbers, the numbers stamped on the frame is CB1-2011276, this is also the the same number stamped on the frame plate it say'' 9/78 CB1-2011276.Now the engine nuber is not easy to see :( I could only see part of it without taking things off?,what do i have remove to see them fully?,I could just see E-2011 ,just the start. The other thing I need help with is I just got it going & when i keep the revs above 2,000rpm it sounds great :D But!! when i let it idle its making a hell of a noise :( ,like a rattle- knocking sound  ,just take the revs up and its goes away :? .I hope its not a big $$$ thing???,any ideas ,cheers Isaac.

Hi again Isaac,

It appears your 1000Z was produced around halfway through the production run and from what you say Sept 1978. The engine number will not match exactly the frame number as some other makes of motorcycle do and will be one hundred or so different.
Reference your clutch rattle. As people say 'they all do that' the clutch rattle is common to the early 1000Z and I would start with getting the carbs balanced. Another alternative is to fit the later pro-link clutch which does not rattle like your early one although it might be expensive if few available in Aus. There is a company in the UK SEP Engineering that does replace the rubbers in the clutch which with age will have hardened and possibly cracked or perished. I think the cost of shipping back and forward to UK & Aus would be prohibitive in view of the weight of the clutch basket etc. I know several guys have had the mod done in the UK and it worked very well. It costs around £100.00 sterling. So.I think start with getting the carbs balanced and see how it goes. Good luck.

cheers Mel

Hi Mel,yes that was me in Australia Steve Newton of Gruyere, alias Isaac Newton. As for the rattle its very very noisy Im having trouble thinking that doing the carbs can help such a noisy rattle- clunking sound. If it is the clutch if i pull it in when its idelling should the noise lessen or change?,cheers Isaac.

Hi Isaac,

I feel you must go down the carb balancing route first and if that does not improve things by reducing the noise the next check is the primary chain which could lead to major work needing to be done. If you are in one of the two Australian cbx clubs there are guys there with a fund of experience on dealing with such work. Suggest you contact them and consider joining one of the clubs if you have not already which could save mucho dollars! Is your tickover set at around 1000rpm? If much lower say 800 rpm or less that will cause the rattle to increase. My email address is cbx6meluk@aol.com if I can help further.

It's no big deal to change the clutch. You have to make sure you have all the parts. You need the center sleeve from a Prolink. Many who sell a Prolink clutch do not include this part.

The sleeve part number for the Pro-Link clutch is 22116-MA2-000. It is shorter than the early one. There are TWO washers that go with it also, not just one as the early models have and the sellers NEVER include those. You can get by with two early washers, but the late ones are a different part number. The correct Pro-Link washers are 30mm vs 30.1mm for the early single one. Either will work but you need two for the conversion. This whole conversion is a big source of confusion because neither buyer nor seller ever knows what exactly they need.

Thanks Dave,

Good point to watch should I fit a 81/82 clutch to my 1000Z. I was confused as it says Guide, clutch outer in the parts book. Many thanks for your input which I am sure will avoid Isaac not obtaining everything he needs. Never owned a 81 or 82 apart from a 1000Z with 82 engine and VF1000R brakes and wheels which was pictured in the CBXPRESS some years ago with my 1000Z and Moto-Martin I owned at the time.
Very best

Isaac:

You need to do some homework on the whole carb thing. Tons of info here. Short version to answer your questions is that keep the stock filter, either the foam or later Pro-Link one. Don't even go to the drop-in K&N - running issues will result and you will have a jetting nightmare with individual pods - search it up here.

Your biggest challenge will be to get the carbs completely clean and functioning as Honda intended. Most guys get it close after 3 or 4 attempts, and that's no kidding. Be prepared for a challenge. Read all here you can before proceeding. Good luck!

I've done an hour on the site looking for a technical fix for the Z clutch sleeve to work on a Pro Link clutch. I remember a few years back reading about making the Z sleeve shorter Does anyone have any idea on the and how much the sleeve needs to be shortened by Any help please. :text-thankyouyellow:
