Tony:
Thanks for the update. You still had to go to a lot of trouble to fix them. Just FYI, the distributor (or A distributor) here in the US has run an ad on eBay for sets of the Delkevics that had the stand stops slightly misaligned. He claims that he has a few sets of these incorrect ones. This is likely the fallout from your experience. Hope all works out.

so the pipes cannot be re-chromed as is but need to be cut in half, the fibreglass removed, the pipes then chromed, the fibreglass replaced, pipes welded up and the weld painted with VHT silver paint. This weld and the paint is well hidden by the heat sheild so is not a biggy.

Tony
You had to do this with a brand-new set of pipes   ?

Yep it was a new set of pipes. I wanted the pipes to look as much like the original 422's as I could. Call it personal madness if you like.

Aside from that, I thought seeing the long stop on the outside of the pipe just looked ugly and it had to go!

Thanks for the update, RE5.
A couple or twelve questions...
Have you kept the stock airbox, filter and jetting?
Any bluing of the headers?

Yep, yep, don't know, no!

I am wanting the bike to be as stock as possible which was the reason I persisted getting the Delkevics as close as practical to looking like the stock pipes. The bike came with a very noisy set of 3 into twos on it of unknown (but South African) origin, so the bike may have been rejeted for those, but it is going fine with the jetting as is.

There is no evidence of blueing at all (yet!), so fingers crossed...

There is a guy near me with a set on his '79. They were from one of the first batches to arrive here in N.A.
They looked good but the left side muffler had a tiny bit of waviness, sort of the same look as the stock pipes get when the inner baffles start to swell. Maybe an ode to authenticity.
No bluing and the sound running through the gears was terrific.
