red flags

Post by toybldr »

Hello all, I am looking to purchase a 79 -80 and want to know what to look for when viewing potential buys. I am not looking for a 100% correct bike but also don't want to be stuck with a lemon. Fuel tank, frame sections or are there other areas of concern that would be a stay away sign?
Thank you

Do you want one running and ready to ride? Or a bit of a project. Price will obviously reflect that. What are you looking to spend? These answers will help us answer your questions.

wiring and carbs are good checks. Brake fluid and forks are the hidden maintenance items people who dont look after miss. On carbs, quick glance stuff is seeing that fuel air shut valve is there and ensuring proper lines with nothing missing. Complete carbs that are gungy easier to deal with than improper or modified parts.

Tank rust and slime also.

The club at one time made up a bike-buying check sheet. Several of us provided some input and I think Jan, our president, finalized the document.
I have no idea where it is. Maybe he will accidentally wander by here and point to its whereabouts.

Thanks for the responses. I will see if I can search out the check list. I am looking for a clean road worthy bike under 10k. Not wanting 100% original show material, just one to get on and ride periodically.

This isn't something to watch for when buying, but something to plan on - budget having your carbs rebuilt by Mike Nixon (http://www.cbxcarbs.com/) unless the bike runs perfectly at all RPM's and throttle openings. You can burn through a lot more than what he charges paying someone to learn the ins & outs of CBX carbs on the job.

There is a document to certify a CBX but this is really only for insurance companies. There is not really a 'buyers document' but we could probably put something together and post it here.

Congrats on the new ride.
Was that the one in Peterboro?
Still a couple months of riding season left for you to get addicted to the CBX.

Unfortunately Kijiji seems to be about the only site.
Occasionally one will show up in the motorcycle section of AutoTrader. Craigslist Toronto is poor.
I heard about one for sale that sounded similar while i was at the CVMG swap meet in Paris. A good place to make connections.
There is another swap meet in Milton on Sept. 13. About half the size of Paris but still a good way to spend a couple hours.

You guys from Canada should post info and dates for these events. There may be interest from us south of the border - or north, if you live in Windsor!
