Sturgis Bike Rally

Post by Sharpie66 »

Well, Gentlemen....I must share with all of you how very, very proud I am to be representing the CBX by riding my beautiful '82X into the Badlands of big, black, rumbling V-Twins for the 75th Sturgis Bike Rally.

My CBX is in tip-top running condition (I wish I could say the same for me :D ) and will be a pleasure to ride and show.

I hope to post more pics as I travel...

Day 1: Holland, NY

Haha. Thanks Mouse. I will gladly be this girls date at the party. I'm travelling with 3 Harley riders. One is towing his bike with the RV we rented and the other two are riding. So far in two days we have covered 900 miles and have made it to Des Moines, Iowa.

My CBX is riding perfectly and I got her up to 115mph today with more left on her. I will try for more tomorrow.

I personally keep speed under triple didgit numbers due to suffering a speed wobble at an indicated 125 a number of years ago.(not on a CBX)
Keep it safe. :-)

Made it to Sturgis on Friday after 1600 miles witbout incident. Went into the town of Sturgis on Sarurday and it is bikes as far as the eye can see. Endless traffic and heat. Everybody's bikes overheating like crazy. My charging system gave out right in the middle of town. Parked her and let her cool down for a few hours. Made it back to the campground and put the battery on the tender and replaced the brushes. Yesterday the same thing happened while stuck in traffic and I came to the conclusion that perhaps the regulator/rectifier was overheating so took off the side panels to allow better airflow. Seemed to help and once we got out of traffic the voltmeter was showing 13+.

Rode through the Black Hills and Mt Rushmore yesterday. Fantastic riding. Saw another 82 CBX while riding. Good to see.

Maybe Harleys aren't so bad with the right rider :D

Good fix with removing the side covers.
These things are too heavy to push.

Patrick: Great pics! Two things - these things don't charge at idle, and if at all possible, stay away from stop-and-go traffic in that heat! Easiest way to cook a CBX engine is excessive heat. It is hard on internal engine parts for sure, but also on intake rubbers and connector O-rings in the carbs. Hope your trip continues with no more charging issues.

CBX on the Plains of South Dakota...
Nothing but open roads and open throttle! Absolutely beautiful riding.
Of course there is the occasional native wildlife to watch out for...

Found this beauty in a culvert and tied the GoPro to a stick to get a better look.

Deciding not to take my X into town again, a local gave me a short cut to bypass the town of Sturgis...a 30 mile trip on a gravel road. My '82 is now off roading a bit and performing very well. One thing I don't understand though is why my idle takes a dump in the heat. Back in Buffalo when it is hot out my idle speeds up but here in South Dakota it decreases.

So far an absolute fantastic experience and I couldn't be happier with my CBX. Definately giving these bikers something else to consider.

Humidity maybe?
Buffalo is humid, South Dakota not so much.
I.m from Alberta, (low humidity) when I take my Diesel Dodge to the BC coast(higher humidity) I get better milage and It runs noticably quieter and smoother. :twocents-02cents:

Thank you, Patrick! I did. Last time we went to Sturgis was in 2000. This brought back some memories. I think this year was some kind of anniversary and they expected 1.2 million visitors. Slightly too large of a crowd for me. ;-)

15 days and 4,265 miles put on my CBX. Not one problem except for the charging system crapping out the first day due to extreme heat and miles of bikes traffic-jammed. Rode up and down Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Devil's Tower and The Badlands. Survived 3 hailstorms, 1 almost tornado, 1 rattlesnake and jumping out of an airplane 7,800' anove the Town of Sturgis skydiving. Wiped out once on a muddy road and broke turn signal housing but repaired with gorilla tape for the ride home.

An absolute awesome experience and I immensely enjoyed riding the CBX the entire time.
