CB450 Bonneville Salt Flats racer

Post by hondaman160mph »

Just finished this CB450. It's a '73 motor in a Amen frame. I wanted the look of an old school salt flats or dry lake race bike.
Polished all the aluminum and did the paint myself. It's much lighter than a stock CB450 and surprisingly fast for only 450cc's.
Actually running it at Bonneville is on my bucket list , we'll see. Such a big bucket and so little time.

That is cool as hell, and I love the details. More photos? Did you document the build anywhere online? Love it.

Superb,
I had a standard black one back in 1965. One of the first in the UK. Always regretted selling it.
Well done. Mel 1876

Very cool bike, hondaman.
Never seen gauges mounted there.
Just curious on the significance of #127?

The number 127 was my AMA number back in the early 70's when I was racing motocross.
Mounting the tach and speedo on the side required some creative routing for the speedo cable. It comes out of the drive and crosses over the front wheel under the fork brace.
The rear fender is off a '65 CB450,a rare find at a local salvage yard. The fender is strong enough to mount it without struts making for a cleaner look.
The exhaust has cut outs , kinda like a stove pipe damper. When closed a hole in the center of the damper quiets the exhaust somewhat and provides a little back pressure. When open it's straight through and scares children.
I made the chain guard , license plate bracket , battery box and a few other brackets out of aluminum to keep it as light as possible.

Great looking bike! Another example of the hidden (and not-so-hidden) talents of members here!
