Re: 79 front brake upgrade what calipers
Neil, just a reminder - these have a different swept area than the stock single pot calipers do. Are you also installing rotors to match?

Re: 79 front brake upgrade what calipers
Hi Nils
that is the next thing i need to look into, i did tempfix them to bike when i first got them and they seem to cover the disc sweep ok but i now have the bike on my bike lift so i can fit them properly and see how they are.
the disc size on the my cbx and the cb900fb are the same size so i am hoping it will be ok.
cheers

Re: 79 front brake upgrade what calipers
Yes, they will work with the stock rotors, but you soon see that there will be a significant swept area from the old set-up not covered by the new calipers. This may look odd to you and will certainly cause the new non-swept area to corrode. Lots of proper rotors available over here, not sure what your options are over there. Our later 750/900F bikes had nice rotors for your application, as well as lots of others.

Re: 79 front brake upgrade what calipers
It's not the size, i.e. outside diameter. They are the same. It's the "swept" area, like we said several times before. The area the dual piston calipers swipe over is narrower than that of the single piston. Consequently, the stock 1979/1980 brake rotors when used with dual piston calipers will have a strip on the inside, which remains untouched by the brake pads. It will all work fine, but you will have a cosmetic/appearance issue.

Re: 79 front brake upgrade what calipers
To make it a little more visible for everybody :
The first picture are the rotors that are stock on the bikes with single piston calipers, i.e.: 1979 (CBX-Z) and 1980 (CBX-A)
The second picture shows the rotors that are correct for a dual piston caliper conversion, which ARE NOT Prolink calipers! The 1981/82 Prolink (CBX-B and C) are different yet again, as they are ventilated designs and only work with the Prolink calipers.

Neil, that "story" at Photobucket is set to private. Set it to public and then we can enjoy the fruits of your labor
Good job!

Not to pick nits, because you contributed a lot of clarity to this topic here Mike, but strictly speaking the above comment only applies to the FRONT rotors I believe. I'm pretty certain I have a Prolink rear rotor on my '80, which bolted right up with the two-piston caliper. Hopefully Dave wanders by, because he gave it to me
