Memories of Deals Gap Jun 1997

Post by cbxmel »

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would stir a few memories with some of the pictures I took at this great rally. Can't recall all the names but I am sure you will know who you are! I recognize Georges bike and a few others. Will post some more. Thanks to Mike Tuman for organizing the rally. Like the extensions on the mufflers on the 82.

all the best Mel 1876

Here are a few more. The black 79 is the one Mike let me use at the rally. He did not tell me the back brake did not work before I rode the Dragon on wet roads! cheers Mel 1876

Missed this one with George's special on it. I think that is Greg Smith on the left who owned the white Moto-Martin they are standing by. I remember he had a beard although not the other guy with one.

Mel,

First, thank you for posting these pictures. They certainly bring back memories.

May I have your permission to insert the names with the appropriate pictures?

BTW, that's not Greg with the Martin, but it is his brother.

ps I looked up the report of the rally in cbxpress Vol16 no3 and Mike Tuman says the Moto-Martin belonged to Steve Smith the brother of Greg. My buddy from the UK Chris Burrows also joined us.He did not know I was attending and I did not know he was. Big surprise for both of us!

It seems that adding captions is not as straight forward as I had hoped. It's beyond my abilities.

So, I'll reference the pictures with names here:

Set 1- Looks to be Uncle Fester (me) in pic 4.

Set 2- pic 1 Ed Perkins and Mike Tuman
pic 3 Mike Tuman

Set 3- pic 2 Rich Gerhold

Set 4-pic 1 L-R Bill Hertling, Mickey Cohen, Greg Smith, George Dilloway
pic 2 Dilloway Special

Thanks Rick,

Yes, some of the names come back to me now and in particular the late Rich Gerhold and Mickey Cohen. Here are a few more for everybody to look at. I think the guy on the turbo came with Rich. The tree has the remains of those who did not make it through the Dragon. The pants probably belong to the cop that ended up in the trees!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Boy! Those are sure "memories" of a time gone by: a Corbin King and Queen on a CBX..
Rich Gerhold's yellow and red custom was the first CBX I ever saw with "lattice" peg holder plates. Had to be at an early VMD at Mid-Ohio, maybe '96 or '97. The image stuck somehow. 8)

We had quite a large group for that rally, the hotel at the Dragon was full with ICOA members, we had a couple cabins in Fontana where myself and another large group stayed and I think Rick and Susan stayed in Alcoa. The ride back to the TVA cabins in the evenings was always a good time, between the spirited riding and the boars crossing the road, things got interesting. :o

Thanks Jeff,

I remember avoiding tortoises in the road on one of the rideouts. Don't get that in downtown Abergele where I live! They were everywhere. Enjoyed it though.
Thanks for all your input.
