On valves in cylinder heads the close coils go towards the head, In forks the close coils go at the top. It is absolutely to do with the reduction of unsprung weight and in the case of the valves, unsprung weight is seen from the valve, in the case of the forks, unsprung weight is seen at the wheel.

But I don't want to tell you how many cylinder heads I've seen with the springs all the wrong way around, or mixed :shock: or correct. And the engine ran fine, mostly, the valve bouncing starts at around 12000 rpm on a well built motor, perhaps it starts earlier with the springs installed incorrectly? Assume same effect with front forks. But, if you want to install correctly, closer coils always go towards the main side of the vehicle, open coils to the item suspended.

p.s. regarding the screw in the speedometer, they didn't put screws in until the late models, so make sure your unit has a philips screw in it...
