Re: Group buy now closed - replacement footrest rubbers
The glue took longer to source than it took Wim to pack and ship the rubber parts! Thanks also belong with Barry Adam for sourcing this alternative adhesive and trying it. Hope we all get the same great result as he did.

Re: Group buy now closed - replacement footrest rubbers
A report on installing the new rubbers with the glue supplied with the group buy:
I glued my replacement footpeg rubbers on last night and it went very well. I prepped the pegs and rubbers per Wim's instructions, but did not kerf the rubbers with a saw blade - you may or may not want to do this. I applied a fairly thin layer of glue to both rubber and peg, noting exactly where the rubber gets glued and where it doesn't. Good thing, as the glue kind of bonds with the rubber and you don't want any runs or drips showing on the finished product. You can't fool around once you've spread the glue - it sets up pretty fast - 2 or 3 minutes. Squeeze the rubber out pretty firmly to extract the excess glue, but have a rag with some solvent (I used brake cleaner) to wipe off the excess immediately. I squeezed the rubbers for about 5 minutes with 3 hose clamps around the whole peg, but took them off soon to wipe off more excess glue. After that, the glue seemed set and I just wiped everything off and let them set overnight. This AM they seemed completely cured and quite firmly attached. I think it will work fine.
Caution on the glue - follow the warning on the bottle - if you stick your fingers together -DON'T try to pull them apart - run warm water on them for a few minutes and they'll separate. I used Berryman's carb cleaner to take off the dried glue on my hands - you will get some on them. I was afraid to use rubber gloves as the glue would have stuck and pulled chunks of glove off in my work. You may want to do something different in this regard - but that's what I did and I survived the night.
The pegs look fantastic and it's a very worthwhile project.
Dave

Re: Group buy now closed - replacement footrest rubbers
On page 1 of this discussion, Nils posted a glueing "how to" PDF that showed a very thick coating of the glue being applied with a caulk type of gun so there was a lot of glue available.
The $22 glue bottle supplied is 1 ounce. Was one ounce really enough vs the PDF instructions which shows a thick (2mm--3mm) layer being applied ?
Thanks Dave.

Re: Group buy now closed - replacement footrest rubbers
If you keep reading Mike, you'll see that Barry Adam found a cyanoacrylate glue that's an entirely different animal, tried it, and it setup fast and worked very well. He also reported that a little went a long way, and that 1 oz would likely do several sets. Dave just said he did a set with it, used a 'thin layer', worked great. That enough data for you?Mike Cecchini wrote:On page 1 of this discussion, Nils posted a glueing "how to" PDF that showed a very thick coating of the glue being applied with a caulk type of gun so there was a lot of glue available.

Go forth and glue your rubbers young man. It's gonna be all right

Re: Group buy now closed - replacement footrest rubbers
I wouldn't have wanted any thicker layer of glue, as it still oozed out everywhere. I used about 1/3 of the bottle and that seems quite enough. Wim's adhesive has a much longer set-up time and in the photos he is wiping quite a bit of excess off as well. With the supplied glue, you wouldn't have all that much time to squeeze and wipe, as it were, before it set up. Different adhesive, a bit different application. I'm happy with it.

Working on my pegs today but removing the old rubber is slow going. What is the best way to get it off?
