I am not going to get into any "expert" discussions here anymore but I want to say this:

Something seems to be a little off with the paperwork you have. Production started in April of 1978. I will check my records again, but I think, they build around 4000 bikes in the first two months. For your bike to be first registered on May 28, 1978, it would have to be produced in April or early May and I don't think they were up to No 12216 that early. I looked at your pictures again, trying to see if for any reason you may have a U.S. bike that was exported to Europe with some obscure and tempered-with heritage. It seems, however, your bike is a U.K. bike and may have come from England to Spain, or may be a European direct import. In any case, the European VIN plate mounted on the side of the frame instead of the steering neck like in the U.S., does not carry the month it was built. I have a 79 frame with VIN 14562 and it was made in 10/78. I would think that yours should be August of 1978. How it could be registered on May 28, 1978 would be a mystery to me.

Hi Mike,

I think you are correct as my 78 Z is 13529 which I always understood was September 78 manufactured date.

As far as I know, no CBX was available for sale in the US until sometime in July of '78, maybe very late June. PA got lots of April '78 built ones, generally in the high-'teens to low-2000 serial numbers. Found number 194, a silver '79 from Pittsburgh all it's life. My #1917 was at a dealer in North Central PA. the middle of July of '78. Also found #77 in Georgia, had been in that area all it's life as well. So while the West Coast may have gotten lots of low numbers, the East Coast did as well, arriving in Baltimore and scattering from there.

My bike originally was from Germany, I don´t know if was directly imported from ... ?

Was imported to Spain in 2.001.

This is my plate number registration:

And the bike documents, as you can see the date of first plate number is May 28 of 1978, may be a mistake of traffic administration when they made the spanish documents...

Thanks for the information guys !!! :text-thankyouyellow:

That is very interesting, that the bike came from Germany. It is not a true German version. It has a mileage speedometer (German bikes had 240 km/h instruments) and as far as I can see, it has the large alternator. German bikes had the smaller version. Does it have a "lights on/off" switch?
Check if there is a VIN-number vertically on the steering neck, stamped into the metal. Also, check the engine serial number. I have a funny feeling about that serial number on the plate.

@'Daves79x',

Hi Dave,

Do you happen to have any photos or history about the early Bikes you mentioned ... #77, 194, etc. I'd like to include them in the "CBX Book II" section on early-Production Bikes. It is interesting to learn that the early ones also got scattered across USA, as all the survivors we knew about a few years ago seemed to originate from the West Coast. Thanks for any help or pointers.

One of the earliest CBXes that I have personally seen was CB1-20 00045 with engine serial CB1E-20 00064. It was a Perseus Silver, for sale here in Toledo, Ohio. Unfortunately, I lost track of the bike and don't know where it ended up

The earliest serial number that I have definitely produced in June of 1978 is CB1 -20 03980, the earliest September bike is ...13082, once again confirming that ..12216 is most likely an August 1978 bike.

Hi Mike,

Did you happen to take a photo of #45 when you saw it? I'd be interested to add it to the Book Section on early Bikes ... #48 is now owned by a fella in Britain (originally a Californian Bike), so would have been in sight of #45 just ahead of it!!!

No, Ian. I did not take a picture. I ran into it while on a trip with a few friends during a BMW rally. Did not have a camera with me. The bike was for sale at that time.

Ian:

I don't have any photos of the two bikes I referenced - just ones I ran across.

Ian,
Didn't you photograph #44 here in California at the Rock Store?

@Mike / Dave ... Thanks guys.

@Phil ... Yes I certainly did, after your good introduction to Rick at the 'Rock Store' ... I think you personally know everyone on Planet Earth who owns a CBX (hehehe)!!! #44 is now the oldest production CBX I have found for inclusion in the "CBX Book II". If anyone knows of the whereabouts of #42 or 43, let me know. No point keeping it a secret ... let the world of CBXers know via the new Book.

Best, IAN

Ian,
I believe that I remember Rick saying that #43 was sold from the same dealership as his #44.

Thanks Phil,

I didn't hear that. I will ask Rick if he has any further information on it.

I hope to visit with you guys again at the 'Rock Store' in mid-August ... will be on a nice black CBX-A (rare Made in Japan) that I got in Illinois!

Best, IAN
