82 CBX first startup since new

Post by Steverino »

Here is a cell phone video right after a full and careful prep and gassing her up. There was a little gas in the tank and settlement bowl from back when Honda did their test, but thankfully they knew it might sit for a while so they ran the carbs dry before crating it up.

Sounds good! Now a tip - do not let the bike sit and run on the choke - if you allow the rpm to increase much over 2000, the head pipes will turn blue. Warm up by petting the throttle with very little choke, then get it moving.

Thumbs up is right. That has to feel good.
Are you saying there was a bit of 32 year old gas in the tank?

Yes, I want to treat this bike right. Definitely don't want blue pipes. I bought one of those air movers for drying carpet to set in front of it to keep the pipes cool. I learned my lesson about that with my CA95 a few years ago. 50 year old bike and I was the genius that overheated its pipes.
I discovered the old gas when I went through the fuel system shortly after I bought it. There was about half a coffee cup. High quality gas though. Darkened but clear, clean and it didn't smell spoiled. I flushed the system with Sunoco before I started it.

Sounds terrific. Will you ride it or keep the miles below 10?

I am taking care of the little things Father Time has done to it. The brushes were stuck to the armature so I pulled the starter and serviced it. The brake fluid was like pancake syrup so I flushed and cleaned up those systems. Thankfully the carbs were dry and so far, no leaks. I had oiled the heck out of the motor before I started it so there was a pretty good blast of blue smoke on first start but that cleared up pretty quick. I've run it about ten minutes so far while keeping a real good blast of air on it and it idles right down to about 500 rpms nice and smooth.
I'm not going to ride it, at least for a few years. I'm planning on trailering it to a couple shows and seeing if anybody is interested in looking at.

Thanks Dave. I sure see a lot of them with toasted pipes. Some owners will let fast idle/rev for 10 min and they are so dang hot you could roast hot dogs.
