1978 cbx1000

Post by isaac »

Hi all
Im new here,I just wanted to ask why when Im looking for parts & Info on my 1978 cbx1000, that most places on the net I visit, refer to how the parts or info are for the 1979-80 cbx1000.Say for example on ebay they say the parts are to fit the 1979-80,no mention of 78?,or does it just mean it goes without saying they will fit that model??.I would be interested to here if anyone els has noticed this,or the the reson for it,cheers Isaac.

Only in a few countries did the bikes get titled as '78'. Most honored the frame plate which says '1979 Model' on all '79 CBXs. Your bike is a '79 by Honda's definition, as stated on the tag.

About 19,000 of approximately 24,000 "79" CBXes were built in 1978. Production started in April of 1978 as a "1979 Model" and this is how it is being referred to. Some European countries define a vehicle's "year" as the year it was first registered in.
So, you will find 1978 CBXes in the U.K. or Germany, for example. By the same token, you may find a 1983 or even a 1984 there.

Hi Isaac,

The Uk was one of the first countries to receive the 1978 1000Z CB1 and Honda Uk imported around 2500 from June1978 upto the end of the year. My own was built in Japan in November 1978 although not sold until September 1981 as it hung around in a dealers showroom for over two years so the rego shows it as a 1981 model which of course it is not. You should be able to find full details of the history of the cbx on any of the cbx club related sites including this one and the Australian or Uk club sites. Hope this helps.

Welcome, sorry for the bad manners. To be completely clear, your bike is only a 1978 to the Australian government. For parts and any other service needed, it is a 1979. Again, please check the frame tag and you will see this.

Hi again Isaac,
You will see in Ian Foster's excellent cbx book that all of the 1000Z's imported into the USA and some other countries do have 79 on the vin plate with the frame number. However,as I said in my previous post those in the Uk were treated as the 1978 model and in fact 78 is shown on my current Z and all the other 20+ cbx's I have owned. You will clearly see a vin plate similar to mine shown on page 66 of the book which you can compare with the 79 vin plate shown on page 68. All the official Honda Uk brochures and price list literature I have here treat the Z as the 78 model. One even says 'The Superstars for 1978'. In the UK we then jumped to the 1981 B model pro-link over here as Honda Uk did not import the 1980 A model which I think is a great pity. We do however have around twenty over here which have been brought in as personal imports.
At the end of the day be it 78 or 79 they are all the amazing bike we love to ride and own. Perhaps you could give us on here the details of your vin plate? I know some owners over there in Australia have imported a few from the UK as well as the USA. My son Andrew who lives in Torquay near Melbourne has seen examples of both.
all the best Mel

What are you saying, exactly. Mel? The VIN plate of your Z, built in November of 1978 says "1978 Model" ???
The standard Euorpean VIN-plate mounted on the side tube of the frame (not the steering neck) does not state any "model" as far as I know. It doesn't even give the built date in form of the month, like, e.g.: 8/78 in the right upper corner of the steering-neck mounted plate on the CB1s sold in the U.S.

Hi Mike,
All I am saying is that we treated all the 1000Z's imported into the Uk as a 1978 model and all Honda Uk literature and tests in magazines such MCN etc did also.I am not saying it says 1978 model. Honda Uk never imported any 1000Z with the large 79 on the vin plate as the ones you guys over there did. Not sure about those on the European mainland as have not done any research on those sold there. You may have knowledge of those? We did not have the standard European vin plate on the side tube that you mention, only next to the steering neck as shown in Ian's book page 66. As I said previously we then jumped to the 81 with no 79 or 80 models sold by Honda UK. Roger Etcell who was the Honda Uk motorcycle import director has confirmed this to me over the telephone and also that they treated the 1000Z as a 1978 model in all their advertising literature. He is the guy shown on most Honda UK advertsements over here on a 1000Z in red Hondastyle leathers with a sunset as a background to the picture. In fact I now own the leathers and gloves he used on the photo shoot and display them at shows on occasion. They are far too small for me!

I think the VIN plate you are referring to was pretty much standard in all European countries, Mel! 8) Not sure what other countries had the same large plate as the U.S. :? :?
Germany did not get an "A" (SC03) CBX either. All that were there, made it through other than the direct Honda Germany import channels. Honda did sell CBX-Zs with black bodywork in Germany in 1980.

Here is a picture of a German VIN plate and the location on the frame

Hi Mike,

Very many thanks for taking the trouble of posting a picture. Yes,that is the one I mean which is identical to the Uk bikes. A Uk cbxer has just finished building a black 1000Z based on those sold in Germany and has already within a month of completing the project won several awards at bike shows. The judges obviously liked the black colour scheme! I am also a fan of the black although always owned red or silver ones. Thanks again .
