New Member - Chicagoland

Post by 4jbshere »

Hi All,

New member and proud owner of a 1979 CBX with 1500 original miles. From the first time I saw a CBX in a Honda dealership in Carbondale, IL I just knew I have one, one day. I believe this is one of the most stunning machines ever built - art work.

I purchased the bike in 1985 from a farmer in Decatur, IL. The farmer purchased the bike in late 78 and left it in the crate until 83. He used to ride the bike on the road around his farm and that’s it. I rode it for a limited time and then life took over, I moved to 11 cities in ten years work, then got married, then came kids. The bike has been sitting in my Dad's garage ever since.

The bike is completely original, including the tires. I have the original owner’s manual, service manual, cover, tool kit and other items.
I have wanted to get it up and running for years, and I think now is the time.

I am looking for other members around the Midwest that may have recommendations for a good shop in or near IL, WI, or MI. I know it will need Carb work and other refreshing after sitting for all these years.

Looking forward to learning from folks on the board.

Welcome to the board JB!

I would buy a copy of the Honda factory manual. It will give you detailed instructions for removing the carbs and once you have them off the bike, you can mail them to one of our carb experts who will give them a thorough going through and set them up so the bike will run like a Swiss watch when you put them back on the bike. The other little details which will probably need tending to like setting the timing, replacing the plugs, adjusting the cam chains and such are easy enough for the average guy to do with the aid of the manual

I'm kinda like you - I could never hope to get the carbs cleaned and adjusted well enough for the bike to run properly, but there are several guys who frequent the forum (like Dave McMunn or Mike Nixon) who specialize in carb work and they can make them better than factory new for you . . . . if you can remove and reinstall them, you will have an instantly running bike which will perform at least as well as it did when new . . . . and you'll feel like you did it yourself ;)

John:
Welcome to the forum! Wow - looks like you have a real gem there. There will certainly be lots of things to check on the bike since it's been idle so long, but not many guys start with a 1500 mile bike. Just curious - is it a pretty low serial number? Ask away when you have questions and post some pics when you can.

Welcome, John! Great to have you!
My guess is, you will get offers from people to buy the bike. Hold on to it and don't get discouraged if you don't succeed in getting it running right away. We are here to help.
Looking forward to seeing you with it during one of the meetings in the Mid-West. Plan to come to Motorcycle Vintage Days at Mid-Ohio in July!

Thanks for the welocme everyone.

I will check the serial number soon when I pull it out of the garage. I have a feeling it will be low given the story by the farmer.

The production of the CBX started in April of 1978. By the end of 1978, the majority of the 79s had been produced. If your bike was bought in late 1978 and was made around August, it very likely has a serial number between 8,000s and 11,000s

Hi All,

Quick update. I am in the process of reviving the CBX. All the usually items that need to be cleaned and replaced after sitting for an extended period. Hoping to get it up and running by Fall.

After nearly 20 years of sitting in the garage, the CBX was restored and is up and running! WOW - I cant believe how great it is to get back on it.

Ola, John-O. Man, did you come to the right place :D
Lots of helpful, willing 'keeners' here.
Best part? When you get to fire up your 'X' for the first time, snick it into gear, ease the clutch out, and float off down the road!
Welcome 8)
