Very Nice CBX. Also a low VIN number.
Just for curiosities sake, does it still have the original
smooth cylinder studs or have they been replaced with the
spiral ones? There was a recall and service bulletin but there
are still some out there with the smooth studs.
Best,
Phil

Wyly,
I think you will be fine. I have had at least 5 or 6 of them and never had an issue. The service bulletin is dated 5/9/79 and
is service bulletin #3 for the CBX. It has to do with them leaking oil at the cylinder base gasket. The bulletin says to remove the
rear studs and use Hondabond on the lower threads of the studs. The dealerships were replacing the smooth studs with the spiral
ones. As an aside, I have all of the service bulletins from back then from 350cc to the GL1500 in case someone is ever in need.
Best,
Phil

Kerker had two different baffles available, the street and the race. You may have the street baffle but it might need to be repacked to bring the decibels down a skosh, they should sound throaty but should not drone.

If the VIN number is correct, this is one of the last (maybe THE last) 1980 CBX produced.

Admittedly, I've only skimmed through the thread, but is there a database somewhere that's accessable?

Vin 400825
Engine 2400801
looks like it was made June 1981 but as a 1982 model

Why do you say "June". Does the VIN plate say so?

All 82s were built in 1981. I have no evidence of any made after December 1981. Actually there is only one case I heard of 12/81. Most "late" 82 models date to October 1981.

Hello,

I noticed from the Membership Survey that my frame number was the highest submitted for a '79: CB1-2024573. The engine number, which I hadn't submitted, is CB1E-2024709. I thought that maybe this was the last '79 manufactured but I found in "The CBX book" by Ian Foster that the highest frame number yet found is 2024590 (Battison study). However, the highest engine number from The CBX book is 24149. Is my engine, or at least the crankcase, then probably a replacement unit or, since the difference between frame and engine number is just 136, could it be the original engine?

Any thoughts?

The "Membership Survey" - if you refer to the original one by Pete Ruff - has long been obsolete. Honda documented the last frame and engine numbers for the 1979 model in their CBX-Z CBX-A parts manuals.
They were CB1-20 24590 for the frame and CB1E- 20 24713 for the engine. The highest frame number was a European Direct sales bike, the highest engine number was a German bike.
Your engine could very well be original to the bike. Both your frame and engine number are within the possible ED bike combinations. Not the last ones, but very late. Production of February 1979.
