Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
For those of you keeping score at home my red 79 had a serial number of CB1-2010919 and the motor number was CB1E- 201104. Some one out there may have eitheror both. If so I would really like to know. My black Marysville CBX has a serial number of SC03-2011155 and the engine number is SC03E-2003130. Hope this helps in some way.

Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
Greg: the spread between the frame and engine serial numbers on your 80 is slightly higher (1975) than others but not unusual.
Another member here has VIN ...11428 and engine ...3156.
It's amazing, that you still have the numbers off your '79 Only a true CBX enthusiast would! (There is a digit missing in your engine-no)

Mike,
You are right, there should be an additional number, however it is not listed on the copy of my old title. From the looks of the title they omited the last digit.

My 1980, Eng. #269, still had the original advancer when we recently added a Dyna ignition and coils. The Dyna ignition was not compatible with the 469 advancer. Thanks to Louis for providing (selling) me a 469A advancer and to J.R. for sorting it all out! My bikes powerband definitely got better starting around 6500 rpm. A noticeable difference!

Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
We didn't have a post in this thread for a while....
As I was just working on the CBX development and production start write-up after another conversation with a former Honda employee, I was able to find more evidence of high VIN numbers.
Ever so often, people refer to the Honda parts book and fiches as a resource for serial numbers. In some of these publications, the end of the 1979 CBX CB-1 or CBX-Z production is stated as serial-no...23175.
I think there is ample proof that this number only applies to the sales region for which the publications were intended for, in this case, the U.S. (or North America)
Besides the fact that we have heard of owners in Europe that own CB1s with VIN-numbers higher than CB1-20 2023175, there now is evidence of the highest number that I will have on record: CB1-20 24200.
This is a picture of the part of the official German title where the VIN number appears:

Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
Hi mike,
That is very interesting as from my researches I have seen numbers around the 24000 which ties in with the letter I received from Honda back in 1991 saying total cbx's of all models built was 41,229 which included so they say 3150 1980 A models built at Marysville,Ohio. Thanks for that information. I will have to see what I have in my archive.
best wishes Mel

Mel: I have the definite record of one other CB1 with a serial number of over ..24000
I am not saying that Honda is lying to you, but as discussed earlier in the thread, the number of 3150 for U.S. built CBX-As is to be taken with a grain of salt, as we have owner-confirmed low and high serial numbers that indicate different.
Here is my summary as of July 2013:
CBX CB1 : CB1- 20 00042 to 20 24200 built from April 1978 through February 1979
CBX-A (J) : SC03- 20 00021 to 20 01694 built from May 1979 through July 1979
CBX-A (US): SC03- 20 10015 to 20 13482 built from September 1979 through June 1980
CBX-B : SC06-XXBC 30 0053 to SC06 -XXBC 30 5672 with lower VIN numbers following a different format outside the U.S., lowest being SC06-23-00020 but none higher. Built from ? to ?
CBX-C: SC06-XXCC 40 0006 to SC06 -XXCC 40 02775 with one higher VIN number following a different format outside the U.S. SC06-24 02864 Built from ? to February 1982
I can verify these numbers with owners/locations or historic records
If these numbers can be used to determine the total amount of CBXes built is questionable

Greg, your number combination fits into the line-up perfectly.
I have chassis SC03 20 11078 with engine SC03E-20 03057 below and
SC03 20 11428 with engine SC03E- 20 03156 above yours as the next bikes on the record

Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
Thanks Mike,
Great research. Your number of A's assumes the run of numbers were consecutive. I have heard there was a break in production at Marysville so it could be that is why the Honda figure given to me by the head of the Honda Collection Hall in writing does not agree with your suggested figure. We will probably never know unless somebody can talk to an ex Honda employee at Marysville. I hope we can find out. Hope you come up with some more interesting material.
regards Mel

Re: Total Number of CBXes Made
Hello Mike,
My latest purchase, a US imported Z shows on the VIN plate date of manufacture 06/78, 2004858 and has 1979 Model printed. From your figures it looks like that mine is a fairly early bike.
Regards

Goss:
The VIN plates for the U.S. bikes differ a little from those in most other parts of the world. The U.S. VIN plate is mounted directly on the steering neck. It carries the serial number, the month of manufacture and a large "19XX Model " lettering.
The production date and the model designation is missing on other VIN plates, like the one from Germany, below, which is also mounted in a different spot, on the right side of one of the frame tubes.
Checking my records and other serial numbers that fall into June, yours must be a real early June production. The highest number for a June production I have is 6580, while 6883 is the first one I can say definitely was made in July.

Mel: If I look at my numbers, there is no evidence for a break. I don't see any large segment of serial numbers missing. I have numbers out of every centesimal up to 3400.
I know a person I talked to, who worked in QC in Marysville at the start of motorcycle production and there is another contact, a person who still works there, who i hav enot been able to reach yet.
