I think many here would have loved to get their hands on this bike to restore it. Unfortunately it is gone. Slaughtered by one of those who only know how to turn a wrench counter-clockwise.

That's sad, other than the mirrors it looks original and in great restorable condition..
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Hi Guys,

Can i pitch in with my details for your records.

My CBX is one owner from Minnesota. "Gary Charles" who i am reliably informed purchased it in November 78.
Silver 26,000 miles
CB1 2010558
CB1E 2010736
Vin plate on head stock says built 8.78
back of engine says (twice) 54.8.19 68

I imported this machine to Wirral England after it had been off the road since 2008. I have rebuilt it over winter and it's back on the road where it belongs. Completely standard and fantastic.

Thanks to everyone for the all the great info and record keeping.

Mike

Avery interesting but at the same time frustrating find at Vintage Days in Mid Ohio.
A red 79CBX for sale in the swap meet and I am totally excited about the VIN-number: CB1-20 23004. The highest VIN number I have seen myself.
The build date also, 2/79, which is the only one I have, so far. The latest before were all 1/79.
Upon further checking, I find out that the seller and the bike are from Canada - which, to an extend, explains the high VIN.
Most late 1979 bikes were sold outside the U.S.

But...when I come home and check my records, I see that Honda claims while the highest VIN number sold in Canada was 23005 (only one more bike sold!!!) the highest engine number was supposed to be 23147
This one here was 23154... :o

Two explanations: 1 - Honda's documentation is wrong ( would not surprise me)
2- the bike is a "General Export" (DK) model - which I must rule out, as it did not have the low bars and rears-set foot-pegs

Just another example that you have to take anything that Honda documented with a grain of salt.

That is outstanding Mike !!
So you are within 2 on the first one made and within 1 on the last one made.
That is some pretty good sleuthing !!
I would also agree that Honda wasn't much on record keeping.
Best,
Phil

Well, you'll have to admit they were pretty close.

No doubt the fly went along for the ride from Canada.
If you look real close it is wearing a toque.

:D :D Careful! Don't get too excited! The 23004 is not close to the last one made. It is only the second-to-last number of those sold in Canada. The highest VIN number produced (according to Honda) is 24590 and was an "ED" - European Direct Import model.

Just checked further into this, and this has to be a Canadian bike. All other kph instruments did NOT have the small mph scale inside the main kph scale. Canada was the only country.

Not sure if you're still collecting this info EMS?
My new (to me) 79 Z has -
Frame no CB1-2022451
Engine no CB1E-2022600
Build date 2/79
I bought it locally (Melbourne Australia) from guy who imported from Canada two years ago.
Cheers, Matt

Thanks, Matt. That is great information, especially as it is a 1979 build date. I do not know what to make of it, because I have a record of a higher number (CB1-20 22525) which, I was told, has a build date of January 1979. Adds to the confusion.

Thanks for the picture, Matt.
I had no reason not to believe you. The other CBX was a bike in Austria and I do not remember where the date for this came from or what made me record it like this. The euro bikes did not have a VIN plate with the build date.
