RJ, check out the VIN decoder on this page, it has some info on this topic, although just about everything has some potential for debate:

http://www.cbxclub.com/club_archives

Mike (EMS) is one of the diligent historians on this topic, among others.

If you're VERY interested, prowl eBay for a copy of "The CBX Book" and there is a lot of info related to the manufacture of the bikes in there.

RJ CB650 wrote:Well, I was going to ask later on this, but since the topic is up, will ask here. Each year, they reset the last numbers. A 0#### bike is japan made, and the last 4 numbers are production order? My 82 is a 01839, how does that fit into the listings? I bought the bike from somebody who was an association member, I need to register myself still.

The last digits, in your case ..01839 is the serial number. Yours is the 1839th 1982 CBX that was built. Your complete serial number goes JH2 (made in Japan) SC060 (bike model, here:CBX) CC ( year 1982, manufactured in the Saitama plant) a check digit ( 0,X, 1,2,3,4,5,,6,7,8 or 9) and then 40 01835 which is the sequential production number. 1981CBXes were all 30 0XXXX and had a "BC" in the model/built code.
So, the information "digit" that was being reset for 1982 was the "C" from a "B" for the 1981.

Most discussions and resulting excitements revolve around early production numbers for each year.
But how about lateproduction numbers??
I would like to hear from those who have really high serial numbers from each model and what the dates are on the VIN plate?

So far, the highest I have are:

1979 CBX January 1979
1980 CBX Japan July 1979
1980 CBX USA May 1980
1981 CBX February 1981
1982 CBX August 1981

Unfortunately, the highest serial numbers seem to be non-US/Canada bikes and their VIN plates do not show the built date.

Any feedback?

My production was 08/81 for 1839

US model. Surprised the Canadian ones don't. Nighthawk shows a build date and it is an 82 as well. Dealer stickers on it are from a Canadian dealer, but who knows if that was from the original sale or maybe a used imported into Canada years ago and re-sold? On my CBX, I couldn't find the date because a thin film of dust and oil covered it. Maybe every Canadian manufacturer's plate just is a bit dirty!

I think there is a misunderstanding here: Canadian bikes have the same VIN-plate as U.S. bikes. They show a build date.

Thanks for the feedback!

That is what I was thinking "Non-US/Canada models" I guess meant "Non-US/non-Canada" Darn grammatical differences!

Just received the information that one of the higher VIN-No 1982s I have on record was build in October of 1981. This being only about 300 below the highest number I have, it seems safe to assume that no CBXes were build in the calendar year of 1982.
With the CBX not really having a direct successor, it would be interesting to find out what Honda utilized the line/capacity for in early 1982.
The GL was already in the U.S., the 900F had been in production since 1979 and the VF1000 didn't come until 1984 model year.

I am still looking for 1979 CBXes with a build date of January or even February of 1979, 1980 CBXes with a build date of July or August 1979, any 1981 CBXes with an 1980 (any month) build date and any 1981 or 1982 CBX with a build date of March, April or May 1981. There must be some out there????

Yes, Al, I have yours! The funny thing is, yours is the last 81 serial number I have a build date for. And there are quite a few later ones. I am curious when the 81 run ended.

Too bad! here is an '82 parted out on ebay. VIN was ..1273, engine serial was ..1272. Quite rare. Frame and engine serial so close AND engine number LOWER than frame.

And that is why I really dislike ebay.

"this was a fully dressed bike. It had only 22k original miles and ran clockwork. The parts will fit 81-82, other parts will fit more years as well."

I know people and wreckers who will buy complete (though some times need a bit of spit and polish) collectible vehicles because they can strip em down and double their money selling em parted.

No offense (and I know you're far from alone in feeling this way), but I don't get the angst. Pretty much everyone that wants a CBX can get one, and we all need parts, many of which aren't available from Honda. If guys didn't part out bikes, my bike would still be parts.

You may argue that some bikes are more or less worthy of the fate than others, but I prefer nice clean parts too. YMMV.
