Oil Cooler Thermostat

Post by cbxade »

Hey guys, thinking of fitting a thermostat to an earls cooler but what i want to know is do i need the oil to bypass the cooler when thermostat is closed so as to still have a permanent oil flow or is it o.k for the thermo to block the oil to the cooler until it opens and therefore stopping oil flow return to engine ? Hope that makes sense
Thank you

If you don't install a bypass, the low pressure relief valve in the pump will dead-head and eventually weaken that spring.

But, I'm wondering why you would want to go to all this trouble, since these motors tend to run hot not cold. Coupled with your larger displacement and modified head, yours will run hotter than a stock one will.

You would be better served having fans blowing down onto the head (where all the heat is).

Thanks for that. I was kind of thinking along the same lines with regards to the pump. It's no trouble at the moment as i am still in the building phase. My thinking is that i want the oil to get to operating temp quickly before the cooler kicked in. Like you say, they run hot but i don't want the head to get over hot

Think about a sump extension, adds a quart (liter) capacity.

Does the oil ‘cooler’ actually cool the oil w/o air circulating thru it?

Somewhat but, more efficient with airflow.
