Honda didn't know they were going to be school bikes. If yours and the two Joe mentioned do not have the stamping, no '81 does. I don't have one here to confirm that, I'm sure several guys here can. The JH2 is only on the steering stem VIN tag and is clearly separate and quite ahead of the other digits.

Dave
OK, I see, Dave. The JH2 is supposed to be on the VIN tag (plate) only, not the stamped side.Once I get the fairing off to view the full VIN tag, maybe all the malarky about school bikes having "odd" VINs will get resolved, at least in my mind.

Does anyone have an Ian Foster CBX Book II, I wonder if Ian has any history on the school bikes? I don’t remember!

Yes! The JH2 will be on the VIN tag.

If so, then the frequent claim that the school bikes had "odd" VINs is not true. They were simply misread by the inspectors, who didn't see the JH2. In my case, a long-time motorcycle dealer who bought the bike from a training institute and the CT state inspectors failed to see the initial JH2. And so did I. When I take the front fairing off and re-route the fairing harness, I will verify this.

If school bikes having 'odd serial numbers was a frequent claim, I never heard it. And I've had and been around school bikes forever. One person screwed up the VIN number on your bike. No mystery here.

And I just checked my 82. JH2 is stamped into the frame. Can't see the area of the data plate where the JH2 would be.

I read comments about "odd" VINs on school bikes in various places. And the original owner of this bike said it as well, hence the state VIN. Initially, I thought there was something to that. But no longer. Sorry for the confusion as I was working through this. I am going back through my previous posts in this thread and adding comments (adding, not changing) to correct this so no one else is misled.

I can't find this on my school bike. I read here (https://www.cbxclub.com/protect/xcerpts ... kesaga.pdf) that "...the bikes had
been Red Tagged by Honda, which meant that no DMV would title it." That looks like the red tag.

The red tag was often stuck over the factory VIN tag. You just peeled it off.
