The International CBX Owners Association

After attending several of the Mecum auctions for both cars and motorcycles and being able to look "behind the scenes" with other bidders and auction pros, I have become extremely suspicious of what and how items are being presented.
Here we are again. On Tuesday 1/12, a Perseus Silver 1979 CBX sold for over $12,000. It was presented as having been in a personal collection for over 15 years and was shown with 5,578 miles on the odometer.
My records, which I am keeping now for quite some time, show this VIN-number CB1-20 15665 as being sold on ebay in 2014 as a rolling chassis for $399.- by a seller here in Ohio.
I hope the buyer will be very happy with his purchase.

Looked the bike over pretty well. Someone worked a miracle if this was the same bike. Can be done, certainly. The only real issue I had with the bike is the paint work on the tank. Painter got lower stripe too high. Other than that, it seemed like an OK bike for that money (especially at an auction). Talked at length to the buyer. Perhaps I’ll hear more of the bike from him in the near future.

Did you check the engine serial number?

I didn’t verify it but the claim is that the engine number is 15800.

So, the charade is over and some poor sods got taken again. The 1982 CBX that sold for over $9,000 with "only" 14,832 miles on it, had a 1979 speedometer!! It seems like Mecum is not at all interested to protect the integrity of their own activity by better researching the material that goes up for auction. This is only the CBXes I am going into. Don't even want to talk about the Ducatis, BMWs or some of the Kawasaki Triples.
Every time I see a H1 listed anywhere with a "H1F" model description and it is NOT a 1975, I have to cringe.

Would most certainly agree. As has been said somewhere, "whatever the market will bear".
