what CBX engine is this?

Post by zalle »

This CBX's engine has a number on the right side, in the same place as this one: http://s121.photobucket.com/user/83GS11 ... 6.jpg.html (mine is not in the same place)

The number is CB1E-2023424

Is this a Z engine? A? B?

Thanks

That is a 80 engine. The 79 engine number is under the airbox on the same side. It is very hard to see with the airbox on. I have used a mirror and had a hard time seeing the numbers that way even. 81 and 82 engines are black and are in the same place as the 80.

Some of the later '79 engines had the i.d. numbers located on the right side and not in the middle buried under the carbs.
Zalle, this chart will show that your engine is a '79 .

So is it a us model?

And I thought there were no us Z's... But the chart says us models...

This engine has a later clutch... It's not original then? It's one with 9 springs.

Who started the rumor that there were no U.S. "Z" models? While the 19(78)79 CBX was not really called "Z" in the U.S. most of the bikes were sold in the U.S.
To determine where the engine is originally from, you would need the VIN (chassis or frame) number. According to Honda ( be careful with Pete Ruff's list that Steve posted. It is over 30 years old and not really all that correct) the highest engine serial number of a 1979 CBX sold in the U.S. market is CB1E-20 23296. If you still have the carburetors, they may give a clue. U.S. models had carbs marked VB60A. European models had VB61A. General Export models and South Africa and Australia also had VB60A, however.
Most chassis numbers over 23000 were sold in Europe.
The clutch has obviously been changed to a Prolink model clutch by a previous owner. Common modification.
Any other questions, send me an e-mail to mike.simon70@yahoo.com

Mike,

Most of what I read about the CBX and USA says that there were problems with the claimed 105hp of the Z, and so the A model was produced specifically for the US market. Is this not correct then?

Zalle,

You should get hold of Ian Foster's CBX Book which covers your questions and much more. Still available from Jan club president mrcbx@att.net or Louis Mintrone usedcbxparts@hotmail.com http://www.usedcbxprts.com tel 352 522 0030 A very good investment. Not many left in stock. The A model was reduced below 100bhp as requirement in certain European markets(Germany).Built in both US and Japan.
