My new CBX project
Greetings and salutations, I hope you are all well.
I am back with a major desire to build another CBX for myself, here is the beginning of it.
I got this 82 chassis a couple of years ago and had it sold to a friend that was killed by the CHP on Friday 13, 2015 so it is mine again but, I can't ride a faired CBX so I removed all the 82 body work and need to get the side cover grommet mounts relocated so this actually comes together for me the way I want it to.
I have every part needed except for the seat and tail light & bracket on shelves from 12 years of collecting stuff and some of these parts are trick so this is going to look pretty good when I am done.
I have BolD'or switches, a free 150 mph Mickey cluster and a few other groovy zoom zooms & wham whams to go with it.
I am finally going to use my 0 mile engine and carbs, they will not be 0 mile for long.
Soon I will be back on a CBX, I almost regret selling my 79 to Eric but, not quite because I had the parts to build another one in hiding.

Welcome back Ray, no doubt we will watch this build with interest. Looking fwd to seeing your eclectic collection of zoom zooms and wham whams.
Just think of all the precious garage storage real estate you will get back as all the boxes of zz's and ww's steadily get consumed and put in their rightful place.
Cheers...Tony

Re: My new CBX project
Welcome back to the CBX realm, Ray. I was curious about you leaving large displacement Hondas and dabble in smaller displacements..
I assume you will be looking for a seat to fit a 79/80 configuration. I have a couple of good used stock seats and also a unused Corbin Gunfighter solo seat somewhere, which I have to dig out.
Send me an e-mail, if you are interested mike.simon70@yahoo.com. I don't come here that often anymore.

Glad to hear it, Ray.
Looking forward to the build.
Like you said when you sold the last one, there WILL be another one.

Re: My new CBX project
I needed to do some cleaning and serious re arranging of the garage and the space is now utilized a little more efficiently.
Oh yeah, I hung the engine to help with the space issues I was experiencing.

Re: My new CBX project
My CBX build had to take a back seat to my Yota that I broke on the 2nd while trail crawling through Gorman for 5 hours in 4 wheel low so I rebuilt the front live axle completely yesterday because we are going camping this weekend and need the 4 wheel drive to get there.
She blew almost of the gear oil out of the breather because my hub locks did not unlock when I turned the knobs.
1st we find out the return springs are both missing from the hub locks, I did not know because I am a motorcycle mechanic, not a 4wheel drive specialist.
This is the new to me 3rd member with a limited slip locker so I have that true 4 wheel drive.
This is the nastiest job there is on this truck and the last major drive train part to be rebuilt, I replaced the whole rear end with an 87 rear because it is 3" wider and has bigger brakes.
When I put the rear end in I put a new Lock-Right locker in and eventually I will re gear from 4.10 to 4.88 but, for now, I have true 4 wheel drive.
We are now locked front & rear.
Now I can proceed with finishing the install of the air conditioning system my truck never had nor did Toyota want it to have.
Off to finish the rig, have fun everyone.

Re: My new CBX project
This is my 1974 Suzuki TS 185 Sierra Suitcase Cycle, one of my other projects that should be coming together in the next few weeks.
It has about 2400 miles and was left outside neglected since 2001, the last time it was registered.
It folds up to fit in the trunk of an airplane and was made at Santa Monica Airport during the last year of Suitcase Cycle production.
They come apart and fold up, pretty cool.
I need a pair of fork tubes for it, I have everything else needed already including paint and new decals.

Re: My new CBX project
Wow Ray,Never knew they did a folding motorcycle. Must be rare? I had a nice new TS125 in the early seventies.
Then moved up to a GT380 followed by two GT750 water pumpers. Those were the days!!! Plenty of smoke!!
cheers Mel #1876 UK

Re: My new CBX project
My last revival was a 1964 Yamaha MG1T Trailmaster given to me by the original owner after it sat behind his garage since 1971, it was in sad shape.
1971 Sylmar earthquake damage on the original miles speedo/odometer.
The transmission oil had fossilized which required basically a new clutch assembly I was able to find almost free.
The little premix engine has been ported and the crank corked so she probably has a whole 8 HP now.
She runs like she should, winey and smokey and oh yeah, I am not a fan of smokers either.
Since getting the bike, we had a redwood fence put around the front yard because both of my Trail 90s were stolen off of my lawn last year.
A fence will not stop a determined thief but, it would have made it more difficult for those guys in the van to steal my 175 lb Trail 90s by just lifting them up and carrying them away.
What would you do when a guy gives you his bike just so it can live again? I had to take the little Yamaha, it was calling my name and I don't even like Yamahas.
I even made the air filter element for this bike being it was discontinued 50 years ago.
1975 Honda CB750K air filter element I just happened to have laying around needed to be cut down by half and then I glued it to the steel.
I am off to go camping, have a nice day.

Re: My new CBX project
I have goodies for this build, here is one of them.
The alternator is on the lift under he bike, I have to either polish or paint it, haven't made up my mind yet.

Re: My new CBX project
Thank you for hooking me up with the ignition today Phil, my CBX is closer to making noise than she's been in a long time.
I still have to buy a pair of Dyna coils, I only have one in house left over from a CBX coil sale I made last winter and I need a late model air box, my 79 air box doesn't look right in there.
Another thing needs doing is fitting the alternator to the CBX-tras adapter plate, we need electricity flowing and I am not one to trust a CBX alternator.
I'm going to fire the engine off as is and see how bad oil consumption is before I buy a piston kit for the 0 mile engine. If she is easy on oil, shell stay a 1047 until I have a jones for displacement.
I know from past experience with 0 mile engines that rust damage to cylinder walls is probable but, there is that possibility I get lucky so I'm gonna run her as is because she spins freely and always has every time I've turned the crankshaft by hand.

Re: My new CBX project
Other than getting a Dyna ignition system, I have nothing new to report about my CBX build but, my 85 Xtra-Cab 4x4 has been getting some serious modifications with a new dual transfer case and new 4" lift springs so we can do the Rubicon Trail this coming September.rpleines wrote:Any updates on your projects Ray?
Dual transfer cases will allow me to go so slow with so much torque, I can get out and climb the hill or rocks faster on foot. The front driveshaft is being made now, long spline for much travel, awesome.
Three shifters now so new holes had to be cut in the floor to accommodate them.
Now a solid driveshaft instead of the 2 piece that was there and a U bolt flip kit in installed but, the rear shock relocation kit hasn't arrived yet so no trying out my dual T cases yet.
