Glad you found your clutch issue , i was trying to figure out myself why it would not disengage, that lock nut would do it , No worries about speaking your mind here we Americans push our free speech to the edge and then some,Most Americans are sick and tired of fighting every other nations wars, Mostly because a lot of us have military families and kids serving like myself, We are greatfull that last War Monger Barry Soetoro is finally out and it seems little Rocket Man has slowed down shooting his bottle rockets over Japan. Also glad to see the Aussies don't care for Muslims either , Glad to see some other countries with some balls are deporting. Very impressive your law study , We have a massive flood of Lawyers in the US, There was a time 40 years ago in America when to have a Lawyer in the the family was to be proud
, Now ? not so much Most the best Jokes are based on that trade, The last POTUS was a Lawyer community agitator and Fraud. We American Natives dont give a rats A$$ what the world thinks of us, I give up trying to figure out how many Billions we give to other countries while we have starving homeless military Veterans and Elderly folk hurting here. The problem Snowflakes have with Trumper is he is from the same fabric as natives here , And living next to NY myself in New England one learns very fast never get into a pissing match with a New Yorker, Ole Trumper being a Democrat most his life has been trained by the Best he knows every move they will try. We are enjoying his term to the Fullest ! Our Justice system FBI-CIA through discovery by Trump looks like the KGB, Unlike Kennedy Trump was smart enough to have his own security close by. Look my friend no disrespect, Watching the US getting screwed by Trade deficits goes up my behind also,We need to be more self dependent , We have every resource we need here. So be it if every other country does not like us ? They dont anyway LOL , Cheers

Gregg: The times when one Nation or Country had the luxury to "not care" what other countries think of them are coming to a rapid end. There is no place in the world that is completely autonomous economically anymore.
I worked in manufacturing industry a long time and saw the supply chain setup change significantly to a point where it is scary. There is no need for a military action anymore to defeat a country.

“Deterrence means simply this, making sure any adversary who thinks about attacking the United States or our allies or our vital interests concludes that the risks to him outweigh any potential gains. Once he understands that, he won't attack. We maintain the peace through our strength. Weakness only invites aggression.” Reagan

What I was saying! Quite a while ago, that Reagan made that statement. You can argue all you want, if it still holds water.
Here is some food for thought:
The largest producers of aluminum are NOT in the U.S. Alcoa is only ranked No 8 in the world.
The largest producers of Lithium are NOT in the U.S. Actually, Chile, currently in the U.S. government's crosshairs, is No 2 in the world.
The U.S. will need friends in the future, not countries they continue to intimidate.

Mike looking at your profile "OHIO", When you say "They" As a American loving old bastard that i am :D If only that was our only current problem i would be more comfortable, Looks as though America is getting destroyed from the inside out. This political Circus is designed to collapsed our financial system, I have been saying for 10 years Here we come Greece. Sorry to Hy- jack our friend from down under thread, That Miss in the motor sounds like a carb issue :D

All I want is to solve the misfire in a CBX but US political activity is crashing the Oz economy amongst many others and making my task more difficult than it need be. That was my point gentlemen. I'm too old for all this farnarcling and the current political situation reminds me a bit of the shield chewing berserkers:-

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-04/ ... 1/11176150

The truth is, that governments everywhere are failing and the entire notion of the sovereign State is collapsing.

Having already been all over the carbs, cleaned all the jets, re-matched the inlets, checked the boots for cracks and played with the needles there is not much more I can do there. I admit to not having measured the floats but they look about right to me and Roly had a look at them too so they will be measured when I get around to it but I no longer think it is a carb problem as it continues to deteriorate.

It could be as simple as a faulty diode and rather than continue down rabbit holes I plan to replace the entire ignition. This is my understanding of contemporary fault diagnosis; replace every component until you solve the problem. The political metaphor reprised. Roly wanted my CV's but I will keep them in case I need to try replacing the carbs. I will also perform a leak test but have a few more pressing family matters to attend to that will keep me out of the workshop for a couple of weeks at least, so I'm just stepping out. I may be gone for some time...

Good luck with the family stuff, Rick. The miss will keep. You'll get it when you have time for it again.

Do I remember right that there was some musing in this thread about running 3 dual-throat Weber carbs? Here's a video of some ancient Italian elf with hearing damage apparently doing just that in his workshop:

I'm back after a very long drive.

Here is a video of the 1980 Calder 2 Hour proddy race with Mick Cole bringing the CBX in 3rd place. This was the same venue he had brought the CBX its first victory 2 years earlier. I had retired 3 or 4 years prior to this but many of these riders were old adversaries. The carnage at the beginning due to oil on the track was often blamed on the outfits, sometimes fairly but they were not racing this day, so who did it and where were the marshals? Of course it would not happen these days, would it? Well yes, when lights replace flaggies it definitely will and does.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7emZJU ... p95Vxn9RME

In news just in, Davo Johnson who I've mentioned earlier in this blog has scored a podium in the superbike class with the Honda UK team at the IOM TT. Davo is the racer who reckons I have an "old fashioned" riding style "like my dad" who I probably competed against when Davo was just a glint in his old man's eye, "...but still quick." That was when I took the 400 out on one of his coaching days and as I've previously stated, its much quicker than the CBX with half as much power. On the CBX I am definitely not quick enuf' because when we faced off a few years ago, me on the lump on 18" wheels and Davo on a round case Desmo, I reckon he would have lapped me if the race had gone another couple of laps. Did I mention he was on a Ducati, usually the slowest bike out there? Since then the lump has grown slower and it's rider older. Entropy is inevitable.

The lump is under a sheet while I attend to repairs on the 400 first. New rear sets, clip ons, grips and tyres are all just about done with the horrible fibreglass repairs to the fairing still to go. Once the 400 is finished I will then be pulling the CR carbs off the CBX and bathing all the jets in caustic soda, fitting a slower throttle cam, pulling the sump off (yes, to check for silicon in the pick up filter, probably unnecessarily - we will see...) and fitting a complete new digital ignition that Roly tells me he has made up for me.

If I can get all that done b4 the end of September and the CBX is running as it should, then I will consider entering it in the 2020 Island Classic in January. That is a really big 'if' because I started a compression and leak test the other day and the initial results are cause for concern and it may need another strip down. I'm not sure how much overlap my race cams produce, so I would not expect the same figures as stock but I know I have prompted the valves to kiss the piston crowns b4 with missed shifts .... We will see, when I get around to it. This is the biggest bugbear of racing. All the bloody fiddling to get the ruddy things to run properly.

Davo's Honda was also 20 kph down on top speed along the Sulby Straight compared to the other Superstocks but he still scored a 3rd and upstaged his better known team mate Ian Hutchison. He was heading for victory in the Senior as well when a camshaft sensor failed and shut down his motor. I wonder if Honda have an electronic 'Have a nice day' message that flashes up when their engines decide to turn themselves off. Honda is not always the best team to ride for.

Next time I am cursing Soichiro San I will think of what he did to Wayne Gardner with the unilateral decision to fiddle with the chassis Wayne had painstakingly developed to win the World Championship. And he shoe horned Wayne's principal competitor Eddie Lawson into the team in the same way that he screwed up is F1 hopes by buying the opposition out with Prost and Senna. Wayne's NSR's often returned to the pits with fist sized dents in the tank. That is when they didn't pitch him off. He was the only GP rider to wear a specially designed jock strap to protect his balls because the evil handling thing kept launching him into the air where he learnt to hang onto the clip ons and prepare himself for a painful return, not always to the saddle.

To my mind those epic duels between Gardner and Lawson and Schwantz on bikes that only a handful of tuners understood were amongst the most absorbing and impressive, in any form of racing. But then there is the IOM, a circuit that is a killer in every sense and where maintaining a margin is critical to survival much less finishing. So when Davo says he rode the Gosseneck to Douglas "short circuit style" to beat Micheal Dunlop by a few tenths back to Douglas, he was literally taking his life in his hands. Well done Davo but don't try it again!

Here are some pics of the little NC30 with its shiny new rear sets and bars with fairing and glass repairs still to come. CBX lurks under the sheet in the background awaiting more serious attention.

All the way from Thailand. One of my old racing adversaries from the 70's set up a business in Thailand and Tyga is another that specialises in race parts, particularly for NC 30's. High quality stuff. Even Honda have their own manufacturing facilities in Thailand. Its' a far cry from when I first travelled there during the Vietnam war days when it was part of the hippy trail from Oz to Europe. Dare I say it was better, less developed? Better for a relatively affluent westerner (even tho' I had little dosh, I still had the luxury of travel whilst many locals were living in cardboard boxes), if not for the majority of Thais, at any rate.

Back to the CBX, I have measured the floats in the CR's and confirmed that they are within specs (ie: 14mm above the mating surface of the float bowl). This conclusively rules out a common cause of an engine bogging down and confirms Roly's and my own visual inspections. All brass bits will now be washed in a caustic soda solution to remove PULP varnish and residues.

Reverting to a more sensitive subject, I observe the current controversial British assessment of the Trump Presidency to parallel the general opinion in Australia and this must be distinguished from the positive view that Australians have of Americans generally, particularly when it comes to national defence. However, whilst there are currently huge US/OZ/British war games underway in the north of Australia (shadowed by a not very friendly Chinese fleet), many conservative voices are expressing increasing alarm over the chaos emanating from the Trump White House. This goes well beyond the economic impact of US foreign policy or the cost of that to people like me. It should be of great concern to all thinking Americans who understand the growing dangers of isolationism.

And Greg just to set the record straight, the British did not treat Australia as a dumping ground for its criminals. Rather, transportation was a response to 30 years of war with Napoleon's republicans. Ironically, South Australia in particular was a planned free settler State based upon Chartist and Adam Smith principles and the first place in the English speaking world to establish full female suffrage. There were no convicts here nor in the majority of the country. Tennyson described Adelaide as 'the Athens of the South and in the 1890's Mark Twain described it as a utopian society in sharp contrast to the America of the day.

To put (non CBX) transportation in context there were more American immigrants to Oz than British convicts, particularly after the discovery of gold. They were generally referred to as 49'ers. The famous republican rebellion against British colonial rule at the Eureka stockade was significantly fuelled by Yankee miners.

Most of the 'convicts' transported to New South Wales on the other hand were Irish political prisoners and they were all used as a kind of free ranging, not quite slave, but certainly cheap labour force to help establish a strategic colony in order to block French expansion in the South Pacific. It was touch and go whether this military outpost would survive, especially when the Irish rebelled at their harsh treatment. Of course, this British invasion arising from a European war had devastating consequences for indigenous Australians and the dispossession and early genocide has become a more enduring legacy that remains to be properly addressed and a subject together with the highest rate of plant and animal extinctions in the world, that contemporary Australians can rightly be criticised for. But that, as they say is another story.

I could see daylight thru' the idle jets and mains and the float needles looked fine too. I don't think it is carbs but I will clean the brass bits anyhow. Altho' compression is down there is no sign of oil smoke under throttle nor on the over run so I suspect the low compression is probably caused by a lot of carbon build up around the valves due to the misfire. It could also be a consequence of the race cams. I couldn't get the specs on the cams from RPE.

If the new ignition doesn't solve the problem then the head will be coming off for a closer look but while Roly can probably do this and re-build it in an afternoon it is not something that I feel like tackling if I can avoid it. I will see how I feel as I have a few months with no historic racing coming up and I won't be able to get the ignition 'till September anyway. I really miss having my old mate engineer Dennis Brown who helped me so much at the beginning but he is on the other side of the country and its a big country. Even Roly in Melbourne is a day's driving away and I have some work to do to get back in his good books. So its all down to Muggins to muddle thru'.
