Had an interesting project come in this past week. Customer had already dry blasted his parts, a little heavily, and wanted to know what I could do to restore the finish from there. A picture is worth a thousand words blah blah...

A nice 750 valve cover, in excellent condition, plus 8 tappet covers, an oil filter housing, and the breather cover for the valve cover. Spotlessly bead blasted, but a little heavily. This would be an enormous PITA to return to nice looking aluminum by hand, go ahead and ask me how I know :-). That Kawasaki hub is in these first photos for visual reference of the finish on his parts vs a "done" part.

Hiya Nils,

Wow! You are going to be busier than ever.
I forsee a shipment of black CBX motor parts coming to you from Mission Viejo in the near future.

Looks like after vapor blasting, I could choose a silver or black paint, as your coverage is pretty thorough.

Thank you Dave, thanks Barry!

Yes, you could indeed. I am of a mind that it might be really good-looking on a CBX WITHOUT painting it, if the target was a silver engine. I'm kind-of dying to try some CBX engine parts, am expecting some parts soon in fact.

Nils,

I'm sure you've already checked it out, but most aerospace work will be to a MIL Spec such as

http://everyspec.com/MIL-SPECS/MIL-SPEC ... 028557.pdf

Commercial aircraft may be to an OEM spec, and each OEM may have a slightly different one.
Even if you are not sure about your future markets, if you can easily (and without significant added cost), incorporate some/any of the MIL Spec requirements now, and QA systems, it might be a good business investment. Or if you ever wanted to sell the business at a much later date. Maybe adopt some of the requirements in phases that make sense to your customer content, without the high overhead that a full military program might require.

It might be easier to build the business around process specs than try to add them later when you are trying to get into other markets.

Barry,

With regard to aerospace, I have been thinking about that suggestion and I have concluded it's not for me, as tempting as it is. And I may regret that decision, but it's driven in part by the fact that I have a good friend that survived a plane crash where a refurbished Hamilton Standard propeller disintegrated. Working on parts that keep people in the air is just more responsibility than I want - I'd rather work with hobbiests at this point in my life. But thank you very much for your thoughts.

Fun one today - my customer left his carbs too long in the wrong cleaner. Didn't look too hopeful.

This took a little longer than something run-of-the-mill but I did manage to coax them back to handsome. A quick trip through the ultrasonic cleaner to ensure they were clean inside and out and they were back on their way to him. He was very happy :-)
