I was removing my swing arm to weld on the chain guard front mount with the bolt. It vibrated off the swing arm, the weld didn't even slightly penetrate the swing arm.

I noticed my front sprocket slid in and out. The washer under the bolt didn't sit against the gear (sprocket). Do I need to get a spacer that will go over the splined output shaft so when the bolt is tightened the washer will push against the gear ?

The thickness of the sprocket is thinner than the distance of the shaft that stick out of the engine.

Parts book does not show a shim or washer.

Help, I want to ride my bike this weekend.

The sprocket should actually be a slight bit wider than the area of the shaft it sits on. Sounds like the wrong sprocket. 530 or 630?

Not sure, but previous owner changed front and back and chain five years ago, rode it one time and I got it. How can I tell the difference ? Sounds like I should shim it so it is tight ???

I think you need to buy the correct sprocket and forget the shims.

Yes, absolutely get the correct sprocket, but you need to verify chain size. All '79s came with 630 chains, but all others came with 530. Most guys convert the '79s to 530. 18 and 42 are the stock 530 size sprockets, can't remember the stock 630 sizes, maybe 15 and 35?

Where are the measurement point, width or length ? Where is a good place to buy sprocket.

Of course, you can minimize cost and try to find the proper counter sprocket for the chain and rear sprocket. But I would toss all that you have and get a complete new set of 530 parts.
You may need it sooner or later anyway!

The first digit denotes the chain pitch (the distance between the teeth). A 5 means 5/8" center to center and a 6 means 3/4".
The second denotes the width of the teeth. A 3 (30) is 1/2" wide.

Your chain will have '530' or '630' stamped on the links. Sprockets have a number on them also. You could try CBX Performance International (close to you) or TIMS CBX for what you need.

I bought a front sprocket from Tims, put it on and it worked perfect, problem solved
