Picked up a new gas cap, would like to swap the old lock cylinder to the new cap, keep one key. I've done this with saddlebags and such, but I do not see an easy way to open up the gas cap lock mechanism.

This is a ProLink. Anybody figured this out?

If both keys (bike and new lock) will fit into each other's lock mechanism, buy a HONDA key blank, take it to your local locksmith and ask them to cut the new key with one side the bike lock, the other side the gas cap lock.
I've done this more times than I can remember.
BTW, aftermarket key blanks aren't always as thick as the HONDA keys and can ruin your locks.

Part numbers 35121-KW3-771 and 35122-KW3-771 depending on "Type 1" or "Type 2".

A great tip, but like CBX-tras said make sure both keys
are the same type. My original ignition is type 1 and
my replacement gas cap is type 2

Sounds great but does it matter which side from the ignition key should stay stock?

No. You'll have a 50/50 chance of getting it right the first time.

Either way it will go into both lock cylinders. Only one will 'work', however, for a given lock. As JR said, 50/50 each time. You might notch the upper outer end of the key to eliminate guessing.
