81 mirror adjustment?

Post by Rocker81 »

How do you adjust the fairing mirrors on an 81 Prolink? One is perfect, straight and view is good. the other is tilted and the view a little too close to my arm.. I took mirror off but could not move it and was afraid I would break it if forced..
Thanks

Must be a tough question with no responses.. I'll check in with my mechanic and post back what I find out.

Gary, I don't remember what is 'inside' the boot. I've had mine off/the boot peeled back. Just don't remember what is inside. What I do know is that it can take a fair 'twist' to move those mirrors. As such, I understand your concern about doing any damage. While you've probably done as such, I'll just mention that when you do try to move them, hold the entire mirror body to twist it. Don't just try to push it or pull it. Wrap your hand around the entire mirror and twist -- not pull or push. Twist can be vertical or horizontal. How hard to twist. I can't really describe. But, doing that, you will minimise any damage threat. It is a ball socket inside.

Having said that, as I do recall, you can 'peel' back the boot to look inside. Might be able to lube the socket joint a bit. Just be careful to not tear the boot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply..
I did peal back the boot, and also took the mirror off to see the ball etc.. it is tight.. that's why I wanted to ask first.. I certainly didn't want to force it.. (was wondering if maybe there was a set screw or something) I see the ball and maybe ill lube it a bit and try it as its pretty dry. Looked like it should be adjustable.. Its like a new bike and has never been adjusted so I will proceed with caution.. thanks for letting me know at least that it should be movable.. ill check back after trying it. thanks again.
