Turn Signal Housings

Post by CopperCollar »

I have been looking for turn signal housings for the 80. Ebay is out of the question, big bucks for questionable condition housings. There are the aftermarket reproductions for a pretty reasonable price but they lack the Stanley embossment.

Here is what I started with:

As one can see a they were poorly painted. I was faced with finding a method of salvaging these. One was sanding but then I would not get the paint off the Stanley embossment. Another way was using some stripping method, Aircraft stripper out of the question, heat gun...maybe.

I have access to a bead blaster at work and so it goes. I used fine glass beads with 40 psig and gently worked the blasting process to remove the old paint and oxidation.
This is after glass beading at 40 psig:

Looks pretty good so far but now I have to bring out the original sheen.

Here are three of the housings after being worked with Mother's Back to Black and a green Scotch Pad:

Not perfect but they will certainly pass for restoration.

Hope this gives others an option to try out.
