I am finally starting the restoration of my 1979 CBX, but I have a few questions.
1. what is the lest destructive way of removing the steering head vin plate?
2. I am having the frame powder coated, can I remove the helmet lock assembly?
thanks for the help.

Carefully center-punch and drill the heads from the rivets (frame VIN tag and downtube tag), then punch the remaining rivet through. They are also glued on - so be careful when removing them - piece of monofilament works pretty well. Fluted replacement rivets are available. Yes, unscrew the bolts heads with Vice Grips and replace with regular screws.

Pete Rose made a tool for pushing his headtube rivets out. See his digitalpizza.com CBX restore page.
I was lucky - a sharp cold chisel wedged mine out without damage to either of the plates. They were not as tight in the holes as I expected, and salvaged the rivets.

The helmet holder unbolts once you pry up the metal flap covering the retaining bolts.

everything you said was true, drilled out the rivets, applied the heat gun and removed the tags with fishing line.
thanks to everybody, its off to powder coat!

Dupli-color changed their numbering system. I'll send you the new # when I get home. Still as good as any to paint the engine.

Did you get any of my PMs?
