Candy Glory Red Revealed

Post by Got3now »

OK, it has been some time but this is a hobby and I am happy to contribute as a hobbist. Here it is: I used PPG and Alsa products.

For the silver base color I used PPG DMD1696 Coarse Silver Dollar.

Then for the color coat I used the following: One quart of DBC500 Deltron Base Coat clear as a binder and I mixed a four ounce bottle of Alsa Kicker Candy "Blood Red" and a four ounce bottle of Alsa Kicker Candy "Orange" to the clear. Reduce this 1/1 with DT885 or equivalent reducer and apply five coats.

The Alsa products are available on line if not available at your local PPG dealer. www.alsapaint.com They are a west coast company and not many have it here on the east coast.

Then clear it and Dam this is it! I used an NOS tail and tank for comparison to get here and it is spot on period. :D

Anyone who is interested in seeing the results can email me and I will take a photo of a front fender I painted and an NOS tail and ask that you only post a comment to this link in return.

I am thrilled to share this information to the hobbist and hope many find the information valuable, and offer no appology to the those dealers who may be offended that I have shared this information.

Total approximate cost: qt. base coat clear binder $35, kicker $15 ea, silver base $50 pint, reducer $10-20 qt, clear expensive also.

The easiest way is to post the pictures to Photobucket or Imageshack and then to link to them using the IMG command provided by them.

Great info, thanks.

This is on my list to do, but wasn't looking forward to spending $240 just for (2) pts. of base & top at ColoRite. I have at least (3) different bikes to paint and it adds up fast. This is less than 1/2 ($115) which I am more comfortable spending!

Guess we paint the middle black first and after curing, mask it off?
Are the stripes decals, and are they available?

Any painting tips you can offer for the novice?

Beautiful work!

Here's a link to cbxman and the decals. http://www.cbxman.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=36
The best looking Candy Glory Red tank I saw was painted with the black all the way to the edge of the tank and hand striped. If I ever paint one CGR, that's what I'm doing. And good luck with the painting, It's been years since I've painted and the hardest part was the prep for me. I'll let someone else make the dings disappear.
