Trying my hand at home zinc plating for the carburator brackets on the 80 while waiting for some gaskets to arrive. I cleaned the grime off then used steel wool to remove some corrosion on a couple pieces and left it on on the others. I’ll definitely do all the brackets as I disassemble the carbs. I used a mix of vinegar, 25% distilled water, epsom salt and sugar and low trickle setting on the 12 volt charger. All the parts turned out beautiful. Maybe not as durable as a professional company but I did it myself as I do with my painting and mechanical work.

A couple pictures of the cleaned shocks with the new decals. I didn’t rebuild these shocks since there was no leaking and felt ok before tearing it down so we’ll see how they seem riding.

With my wife Ruthe across the country in New Jersey providing crisis nursing relief at a hard hit hospital there I’ve got some work done on the 80 cbx. A got another bike lift to get her up off the ground-and keep from hurting my already bad back and I hurt my back lifting the bike onto the lift meant to keep from hurting my back! Lol. Installed the rebuilt rear brake master and rebuilt rear caliper , swing arm. Installed the refinished battery box and wiring harness, rear fender and tail light. Grab rail and turn signals on. Now I’m waiting for some fuel mix screws to make it to as I broke three of the stock ones off trying to remove them. I’ve tried heat and they still broke. I’ll cut grooves in them and keep trying heat with a slotted driver. Got the new rear tire installed this week. I’ll finish the carb rebuild and start on the forks and new tire up front.

Finally more progress. When disassembling the carbs to clean and rebuild I broke three of the stock air mix screws off flush with the towers. Thanks to Nils Menton for removing the stuck remaining brass for me. Well they sat on my carb bench for about 4 months until last week when I got around to cleaning and rebuilding them. Got to the point today where I’ll bench leak test them. I’ll of course bypass the fuel vacuum valve when I bench test them.a found a neat, small fuel filter with a 45 degree hose connectors.

Nice to see the Mike Nixon carb manual on the bench.
A must-have if rebuilding them yourself.

For sure! Great to just read them once in a while too!

Leak tested and ready to install. Waiting for new insulators and clamps.

Carbs are in and now it’s buttoned up! Ready for small details, tank and seat tomorrow

Got a little more done to the 80 CBX, got the tank back on. Cleaned the exhaust flanges. Stripped the torn, old seat cover off and installed my new cover. Need to find replacement seat strap hardware somewhere. Maybe Louis has some?
