decals on side panel

I have an extra set of plastic side panels that I want to paint to matching RED. Any idea how to prep them and to begin, how to remove those 40 year old decals ?

Heat gun, carefully, and plastic razor blades did it for me. Finish with a solvent like acetone since you're painting anyway.

Or a heat gun and a length of dental floss!
