Crankshaft cap O-ring

Post by hondaman160mph »

I removed the crankshaft cap to adjust my cam chain and found the previous owner had o-rings in all 3 holes. Why is an o-ring only needed
in the top hole?

It's the only one that threads into a pressurized oil gallery.

ok,thanks Al.
Another dumb question, the crank cap gaskets I have are from CMSNL and have a line of black sealer on one side.Does that go towards the block or towards the cap?

Towards the block - those are genuine Honda gaskets.

Ok thanks Dave. The previous owner had them facing them other way, maybe that's why he had o-rings on all three screws to prevent oil from coming out the screw holes in the cap?

How do we know the sealant faces the block? It's been so long since I've replaced the gasket, I forgot which way it goes. The sealant is long gone on the old gasket I keep reusing.

The block has the crankcase split right in the middle of where the cover bolts on. Since the back of the cover is smooth with no seams, I assume the extra sealant goes toward the block.
