I don't think it's too bad if it doesn't go over that too much.
I'm planning on removing head this winter and replace valve seals maybe new rings as well.
The engine smokes when revved cold and also burns about 200ml of oil per 150/200 miles.
Not sure how normal that is but I'll definitely check pistons and rings for wear.
I just bought '09 ducati monster that has timing belt that skipped, I can't even turn the engine by hand!
Another project

Finale:

Got her back today and the saga of the $2,060.53 lock washer is over. The shop gave me all the old parts that were replaced and gave me a detailed run-down on all their work (really nice people). Even though the carb intake boots looked fine from the outside, once they were removed you could see the cracks were pretty bad and could have been not sealing well. She runs and idles fine but the front brakes stink, while the rear brake seems just fine. I'll take her out tomorrow and get reacquainted.
Thanks for all your support and I'll look forward to future conversations about "This Old Bike".

I disassembled front calipers and master cylinder and cleaned, inspected pistons and seals and put everything back together and my brakes are very good.
One thing that you should remember, this bike does not have brakes as good as anything modern.

You got the heart pumping, it's downhill from here. Enjoy your bike for the rest of the year and redo those brakes some rainy weekend this fall. Winter is "Hot stove" season for old bike guys, including you now :-)

Great to hear you are up and running.
A ride report and a pic are in order.

UPDATE:

I just got back from Sturgis (did not ride the CBX - rode the FJR). Great trip, great roads, great fun.

So I started the CBX this morning and the exhaust pipe from cylinder #4 is not getting as hot as the other cylinders as the engine warms up from cold start - UHG! I pulled the #4 spark plug wire while it was running and could hear the spark and could somewhat feel the spark on my hand. The #4 exhaust does eventually warm but never gets as hot as the other pipes. I tested the spark plug wire and it ohms out the same as #5. I don't have a coil tester and I was going to swap coils to see if the trouble follows the coil, but I can't get the phillips screws that hold the coils in place loose (any ideas appreciated). I did swap out the spark unit to #4 cylinder with a spare I have, but no change. Could low compression (possibly caused by the recent valve/head rebuild) cause lower temps coming from the exhaust? Or, could it be a weak coil just on #4 cylinder? The shop that did the work said they'd fix this, but I'm going to have to trailer it back to them and I thought a little troubleshooting on my part might be faster and easier than that - IF I could get the coils OFF. TIA!

It's the #4 carb still plugged, almost guaranteed. Don't chase after non-existent electrical problems.

Thanks for the direction to the carb! I did get the coils off and swapped the suspected problem coil with another good one and had the same condition, so it looks like you're on to something with the carb not providing enough gas to the cylinder. The shop supposedly rebuilt the carbs. It idles and runs as it should with no more high idling when stopped.
Looks like it's going back to the shop for carb work. Thanks to your help I'm getting closer to a fine running machine. Much appreciated!

I had the same problem! And it were the carbs.
It is possible that #4 didn't get cleaned completely.

I would have thought the shop would have paid extra attention to #4 carb since I told them that the #4 exhaust pipe not getting hot was the reason I removed the spark plug that the lock washer fell into to begin this ordeal. Oh well, got to stay in the "it could have been much worse" mindset. Another trailer pull to the shop and it'll all be over for a while - hopefully.
Thanks Again -

I took the bike back to the shop today and they assured me they'd fix it at no cost to me. They said they were surprised
because the carbs were "ultrasonically" cleaned. I'm assuming that means they were cleaned by a machine and not by hand?

Well, the passages are so small that im not sure if ultrasonic cleaning is enough.
I used i think 2-3 cans of carb cleaner strating in all passages until it would come out on the other side.
Plus i plucked a wire from the stainless steel brush and Worked it though.
I did all this twice as the bike was sitting and waiting for parts for few weeks.
Im sure that it will be good this time
