False neutral between 4th & 5th

Post by Kool_Biker »

Very - Very infrequently (may be once every few rides), I will get a false neutral as I change going up, between 4th and 5th.
All else works fine.

Does this ring a bell with anybody?

My cases are split as we speak and selection drum, forks and gear clusters seem to be in a good enough shape.
Wonder if I should investigate further before closing the cases later on today :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Thanks in advance, Aris

Aris, in the last entry to this thread, Dave mentions the problem.

I am sure he will be along with some more info.

Dave, this is useful, thanks.
I am about to close my cases so any info is very welcome.
I am reasonably sure it is not a big deal and do hope Dave chips in.
Cheers. Aris

Aris:

Yes, every CBX I've ridden for many miles has exhibited this trait. You just need to be deliberate in the 4th-5th shift. It's pretty subtile, and I'm sure some guys will say they've never noticed it, but due to the shift drum design, it's almost inevitable. I've not considered it a problem and really is nothing to worry about. I suppose very worn components would make it more noticable. Good to hear from you Aris - I was wondering how your re-re-rebuid was going.

Hi Dave and thanks, this is definitely reassuring as I also believe my transmission is sound enough and as you know I have enough witches to hunt, already ...

My re- re- build is going well and I am minutes from closing the cases. Everything in there triple checked and hopefully this time correct :handgestures-fingerscrossed: We'll have to see.
Frankly, more than my engine, I believe it is my confidence which has suffered ...

Other bikes that suffer from a more predominant shift issue, some improvement can be had with a slight modification to the shift mechanism to grind some clearance in the shift fork piece.
Melchiro has a picture of this on his CBX project on another site.
Dave, in your experience, is this beneficial?

On my 900F I did the so called "shifter mod" to prevent the missed shift into third gear. This mod allows the shift shaft to rotate that little extra bit to allow everything to fall into place instead of popping out. The mod works. I haven't missed the shift into third yet (6,000+ miles) with the bike.

The goal pic taken from the 1100f.net site:

And the grinding I did on my bike:

I don't worry about doing this with my 82 CBX since shifting from 4th to 5th isn't done under power (hey, I am in America!!), but it was well worth it on the 900. I remember as a youngster back in the day on my 750F blowing that shift into third on a regular basis.

Hope this helps.

Steve, thanks, it certainly does help.
Knowing that if anything needs to be done, then this is with the easily accessible shift mechanism alone, makes a big difference.
As mentioned earlier, for me this 'false neutral' is an extremely infrequent occurrence, is probably accentuated by lazy shifting (that's me), and not worth bothering with at the moment.

Just a bit further confirmation for you, Aris, I've experienced it a few occasions with my '82 throughout about 15+ years. Just quickly get a handful of clutch and kick it up with a bit of 'authority' into 5th. Don't 'baby' it because that will tend to nick the gear dogs. It's been no problem, though, as Dave mentioned.

Thank you all chaps.
This has now given me the confidence to go from this:

To this :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Let the fun begin :sad-roulette:
Must say, all five gears including neutral, change and lock very positively (have already assembled the gear selection mechanism, which of course is not visible here).
Best, Aris
