The reviews seem to be 50/50 as to whether it is junk or not.

Maybe you can find a local auto/MC repair shop that would scope it for you if you trailered it down.

Well, after getting a borscope and scoping the engine, it looks like my engine is toast!

Here are a couple pics of what I think is the bossed area for the cam chain guide pin. It appears to be all worn down from the pin before leaving the area and ending up in the oil pan. :x

So, the question now is: what parts will I need other than the cases and cam chain guide? Maybe the cyl as well??

On the bight side, I have a good guide pin. :laughing-rolling:

But you say there was no other debris in the sump? Hard to imagine unless the PO knew there was trouble and cleaned everything up just before the pin fell out. Never heard of that before. Good news is that cases are plentiful and relatively cheap. New bearings and gaskets, etc is where the money comes in. Let us know what you need.

OOPS, just reread about the PO's hydrolock. That likely broke the case there and he tried to rig something up, but it didn't hold. Not the end of the world if the rest of the bike is OK - just a lot of work.

Nope, nothing in the pan other than the pin in question. So, obviously, a little shananigans going on with the PO's.
The bike is in pretty good shape so, I'll probably rebuild it sometime in the future.

Sounds like a good opportunity for a bore kit and some re-jetting. Good luck.

I finally had the time to tear into this engine. It seems the previous owner made a mistake and installed the cam guide in upside down! My guess is he then installed that pin in the upper slot for the upper half of that cam chain guide. Therefore, it must have bounced out of the upper slot during assembly. I couldn't find any damage to this engine. :D Not to sure what I bore scoped there, must have been the factory tooling marks in the cases. Anyway, everything checked out within specs. I had Preston re-do the head with new valves, putting in new std rings and hopefully I will have a good bike after assembly. I plan on doing an engine soda blast and re-paint since I have the engine out.

Does any one have any tips or tricks to a cyl/head install? Thanks.

GREAT! Everyone deserves a break occasionally. Nothing like beating the 'case splitter' devil.

Yes!!! I was very surprised and glad to find the improper install. I actually bought another set of cases before the tear down I'm gonna have to sell now.

Good news. Honda's ring compressers make cylinder install easy - don't actually know how others have done it without them. Rest is easy. If you are planning on staying in the CBX business, I'd just hang onto the cases for now. Holler if you get stuck.

Thanks Dave. I wasn't sure if those ring compressors were still available so, I made my own compressors. Yes, I probably will just hang onto the cases, ya never know when I may need them in the future. It's good to know that I have your support and others if I get stuck. 8)
