Clutch rattle??? I have no idea...

Post by sacook542 »

Hi everyone,
I'm well aware of the infamous clutch rattle on the '79 and, I think mine is probably got it but, on top of the other strange noises it may be making I have never actually heard the rattle before and don't know what it should sound like. I'm certain mine has it and, syncing the carbs should help but, there is another nastier rattle-type noise it makes when the throttle is twisted in-gear. If I pull in the clutch lever or, let off the throttle, the noise goes away. Isn't apparent at idle while standing.
And... it's getting slowly worse.

Anybody got anything?

Scott, this guy has an excellent example of a clutch rattle.
It can be heard a couple of times in between his very annoying revving of the Winning exhaust.

Yep, that's definitely the noise that I assumed to be the clutch rattle but, it's not the other noise I'm getting.
I wish I could record it but, I can only hear it when the bike is in gear and rolling with ANY throttle. As soon as the throttle is released or the clutch is pulled-in, no noise.
Curious. Hope the transmission is ok...

Could it be the "alternator chirp"?
It usually shows up in the lower revs when on the throttle.
Tons of info on that fix if that is what it is.

I'm kind of with you Steve. Any alternator chirping will always disappear when the clutch is pulled in. I'd be checking to be sure all is well with the alternator. The only other noise I've heard that was serious was a bad clutch side primary shaft bearing. I had one go bad in a '79 and I've heard of one in an '80 and an '82 that went bad. Serious surgery is required to replace that, but not sure if that describes your noise. I don't think that it describes exactly what you are hearing.

I'll be doing some exploratory surgery this afternoon.
