Is this OK?

This is the area behind the clutch basket in the 79 Z, and certainly seems wrong to me, as if something has broken off.
Any ideas?
Cheers, Aris

Aris:
Have seen this a couple of times - you will find that someone (hopefully not you) installed the trans shaft bearing incorrectly. The locating dowel got pushed up into the case, breaking it out. You should see a stub of the dowel stuck up in there. Guys assemble these not knowing that the bearing cage has a hole for the locating dowel to positively seat and center the bearing. Check it out - I think that's what you'll find. Check the other shaft too, it has the same locating pin.

Just tap the dowel back out throught the hole it made with a small drift, then repair the case however (JB Weld, actual welding, whatever you prefer) and relocate the dowel. It just protrudes a little bit normally - use the bearing cage as a guide as to how far it goes in. You've just about seen it all with this engine!

On a lighter note, who is this masked man peeking out of your avatar Aris? :-)

I just so happen to have a blob of JB Weld in exactly the same place on my '79. I haven't noticed any ill effects so hopefully they put everything back together correctly the second time.

On an even lighter note Nils ... "twisty clean asphalt and low-end torque" ?

I always thought the CBX was about high RPM !!!

Dave, thanks for your encouraging words; but I wished ...
In any case, I will now embark on a detailed observation and measurement of every single part of my engine down to single P/N.

Only then we will know where I stand, and where the nightmares end :D

Best, Aris

I see you found your way to my company website :-).

There are a couple of BMWs in the stable, and those big boxer twins pump that good low-end torque out by the barrel.

One of the most satisfying aspects of rebuilding my (now ailing) engine was the ease with which the crankcases closed in the first place! That was assuming of course you followed the book. All that was needed was a light hand - tap.

I can only begin to think what must have taken the previous ape and his hammer to close it, with the dowel /bearing in question misaligned, until the dowel was pushed in.
