Can somebody give me the quickie tutorial on the function of the oil pressure switch? And related to that, would I normally expect the oil light to be on when the ignition is switched on before starting the bike?

The oil pressure switch is a simple ground signal switch. If the pressure drops below a certain level, a spring loaded contact inside the switch grounds and the light comes on. Consequently, if the ignition is on and the engine not running = not producing oil pressure, the oil light is on. If it is not on, there is something wrong with the switch or the wire.

Yaaa, sorry for the waste of bandwidth, the shop manual showed how simple this is, should take about a minute to pinpoint the problem. Headed in there with the meter shortly.
