It is a good valid number for a 1980. It is around that number when assembly moved to Ohio. Would be interesting to know if the engine is in a Japanese or Marysville frame

My guess is that the frame is a Marysville # in the 100-200 range. 1700 plus or minus were put in the Japan-built bikes.

That frame # is way higher than any reported Japan-built '80 CBX. In fact it is higher than any Marysville bike, I think. Are you sure there isn't a '1' in the string? Does the frame tag say 'Made in the USA of US and Japanese Parts'? An example of one of the higher Marysville #s is: SCO32012492. The '3201' a Marysville frame and '3200' is a Japan frame.

SC03E-2003156 is the engine number mounted on my 80 built in the U.S.A.
SCO3E-2001948 is the engine number for cases I won on Ebay.

As posted last year http://www.spookytoms.com/SpookyTom-CBX-80-1-RB16.html the starter mounts and the area that surrounds the front sprocket are broken and missing so I bought the cases for the day I know enough and have acquired the parts to do the transfer.

I don't know why I posted your engine number since I wasn't aware of it but here is the number of the engine I won SCO3E-2001948.

It's an engine number, Dave.
The number on my 80 is SC03E-2003156.
If this is the original engine number in your bike, you most likely have a bike assembled in Marysville, and with Dave's assumption that the replacement cases are also in the Marysville segment, you would replace it with an authentic set of cases, albeit a little off as far as the chassis-number is concerned.

I have only seen 3 sets of 80 cases for sale so I figured I had better bite this time. I have learned to live with the Marine Tex repairs on the oem case but I am really looking forward to doing an overhaul so I can replace the case and all the chains and rubber parts as well as that pesky starter clutch.
Thanks for the info.
