Engine internals 79-82, interchangeable?

Post by Rhode Warrior »

Are all internals interchangeable? The reason I'm asking is I am building a spare engine and don't want a bunch of parts that I can't use.

For example:

Are all transmissions the same?

Are the cranks/rods/pistons the same? If not, can different years still be mixed in an engine?

I know the early cams were different but are all the cylinder/head/cams interchangeable or should I just settle on a 79 for example and use 79 parts?

Any help is appreciated.

The primary shaft is the only place you'll get into trouble. The entire shaft assembly from any year will bolt onto any other year, but you need the entire assembly. Different years don't mix and match parts. The '79's are unique, the '80's are different, and the ''81-'82's are different yet. The clutch baskets upgraded each year, but will bolt on OK. The 4 center studs on the crankcase are larger in the late models - not sure if an early head will bolt on without issues there. Other than that and the camsthat you mentioned, most everything is the same, or upgraded and will work.
