OIL PRESSURE / TEMPERATURE

Anyone know where to get a combination oil temp / pressure gauge preferably with a sending unit rather than oil line. Porche gauges on Ebay are plentiful but the temp gauge only goes to 300 degrees. I would settle for seperate gauges without the oil line.

What is the normal running temp and pressure for the 79?

Factory specs for the high pressure side is 56.9- 75.4 psig. As for temps, George (cbxtacy) has some good data on that which escapes me...

Do you think a 400 degree gauge would do the trick? I am looking at the VDO Instruments website.

OK, The flashpoint ( boiling point) of modern "synthetic" oils is about 450 deg F. Although that figure doesn't take into account the early break down of the oil due to excessive temperatures ( the need to change more often or indeed flush & change.) The pressure/temperature would most likely be measured at the rear crankcase gallery & that would be almost straight from the pump & "relatively" cool. The hottest oil is resident in the camshaft reservoirs. You may notice a tarnishing in those areas because of the oil breaking down due to high heat. I would say ( unless George or other learned friends data disagrees) 300 deg F gage should be more than ample but that is not founded by experience but pure theory...
As for remote pressure & some temperature measuring instruments, a sealed liquid bulb/capilliary is the norm. Just make sure that the capilliary tube is not solid copper as it may eventually fracture due to work hardening caused by vibration.

Ps. Don't forget to get them weatherproof...

I think non-synthetic oils are designed for a maximum temp of about 275 to 300 degrees - Any higher than that and things degrade pretty rapidly, so I would think that a gauge which reads to 400 would be plenty . . . . if temps go above 300, I'd be doing something - Shutting it off or getting it out on the road

I have never seen one of these :shock: Do they have two separate scales in one clock? :?
Oil temperature gauges usually pick up in the sump. Many have sending units as part of the drain plug. I have one of those on my '79.

I've had analog and digital guages on CBX's. I've had sending units in the drain and the oil galleys all over the engine. The readings have all been the same. On a 75+f day on a good hard ride the oil temp would get to the low 300's. If I was stuck in traffic the temp could easily go to over 350. If I killed the engine then, it would not re-start. If I let it sit 15 to 30 minutes, it would start right up. So it got so hot the pistons would expand and wouldn't want to go up and down. With a 13 row stacked plate oil cooler I've never got over 225. The guage that was the easiest to install was the Daytona. Here's how some BMW owners did it:

I like the daytona guages because they're easy to install anywhere with velcro and also to put back to stock and you'll never know the guage was there. They also tell the temp over 300f. Most analog's go to 300 max. If you use an analog that only get's to 300, when it gets there you'd better be planning a lunch break. I don't use a guage now because all my X's have 13 row coolers.
What I find interesting is the talk of the oil temp thermostat not opening until 172f. If I lived where it got cold and rode when it got cold, I'd consider seeing if I could adapt one. But being in San Diego I could care less. I'd only consider that an option if I lived where it got cold and my bike had a big cooler.

Mine is a metric gauge (VDO) and it reads a max of 200° Celsius. The needle reaches barely 150° during stop and go traffic on a typical summer day. I also have a 13 row oil cooler (CB1100R unit)

150c=302f. It's been years (20+) since I've had a guage on a bike with a stock cooler. Here's a cooler similar to what I use:

I've also used a CB1100F cooler. As far as size and cooling ability goes,
1100F=big
1100R=bigger
13 row stacked plate=biggest
But if you use synthetic you should be safe unless you get in a bad traffic jam. On a warm to hot day. The big one's like I use are probably too much but they're more available then 1100F/R coolers.

I just added oil pressure and temp gauges to my X. http://www.spookytoms.com/SpookyTom-CBXGauges.html. I checked out all the different brands and settled on VDO and used their black metal cans to mount in. They almost look like they belong on the bike. I will give the other X the same treatment.
