I just bought a microfiche reader so I can view and print the motorcycle fiches I have. Anyone here have one or ever used one. I am putting the cart before the horse and need to find out how to use it before it arrives.

Here is a link that explains what microfiche is for anyone that doesn't know:

It should have a monitor and a glass 'window' with a contraption to hold the fische in place as the light below the window illuminates the transparency of the fische and transfers it to the monitor so you can read it.

Simple, straightforward to use. Pretty much as Terry describes it. Plug in, switch on, put the fiche into the holder between the glass plates, select the right lens (if it has two) and look at the screen. You have to move the fiche holder to get to the specific section that you want to see on the screen. Some of them have a print button and you can print the part that you look at. Poor quality and it will fade ove rtime. Pretty much like early photocopies.

Just wondering here, what format is the micro fische ? Could it be placed on a flat bed scanner & scanned ? My Epson scanner does 2400 DPI & may resolve those images.. ??

I think the images are too small to come out on a scanner, Larry. Also, if my memory serves me well, the print is reversed. The background is dark and the line drawings, letters and numbers are white. The fiche works like a color slide. You need to illuminate it from the back and a lens picks up the image and magnifies it.

I wonder what size would the images be ? My Epson is a photographic scanner & can be used on negatives or positives as it is backlit....

The images on the sheet are 3/8" long and 1/4" wide.

That would be 0.09375 sq inches. At 2400 dpi that would be a 540K image which is monochrome too.... I would think that would be an excellent technical image if scanned in TIFF......

I'll give it a try. I'm interested what CB750F engine parts cross reference with the X.

OK, I got a litle sideways looking for my link.. He says "Make an offer".

Bill: Both bikes were "1979" models, but the CBX with product code "422" was slightly earlier than the DOHC 750. Actually, the first 750 with the new DOHC engine was the "K" model, which had the product code "425". The 750F had product code "445". Consequently, any engine parts that would be common between CBX and 750 would have to have a "422" in the part-number as they would have to be carry over for the 750 motor from the six.

Thanks Mike. That's nice to know. The K's and Fs shared a lot of engine parts, right?

Yes, they did. Very little difference.

BTW: Bill, I read your posts elsewhere... maybe the best advice you can get really comes comes from CBX guys.. Anyway: The 900F has the same bore as the CBX. Displacement is made up from bore x stroke, that's why a 6-cyl 1000cc does not necessarily have the same pistons as a 4-cyl 750cc (3/4 of the displacement and 3/4 of the numbers of pistons)
I have seen piston ring sets offered to fit both CB900F and CBX. But beware: The original CBX piston ring set is slightly different from the 900F set.
Also, if you bent a rod through hydrolock, you should not just replace the one rod. Connecting rods are usually matched in a set and this is no different with the CBX. Find out what your rods are, before you stick just any rod in there.
