Slipping Clutch

'81. At the Winter Rally we checked the pressure disks, replaced all the friction disks. (I thought...) we noted the direction of friction disk installation. We mic'd the springs; checking ok. Can the springs check length ok, but lose tension?

Symptom: Clutch slips under hard exceleration.
Help appreciated.

Hmmm, out of adjustment? recent oil change to synthetic? bad steel clutch plates? That's about all I can think of. I run EBC or stock frictions and springs but always Barnett steels. Have about 20,000 on my 79's clutch and not a slip ever. I also run Amsoil synth in my 82 and no slips there either.

Condition has existed for awhile. Oil: Fresh 10-40 Pennzoil. Clutch recently adjusted. Are your springs original? Mine checked ok for length. I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced their clutch springs losing, well, their "spring"... I checked the steel plates for thickness; ok. I replaced three warped disks with new. Friction plates are a new set. It almost seems to slip worse than before service.

When you say fresh 10-40 Pennzoil, do you mean car engine oil? If so, my guess is that the 'friction reducers' contained therein are the culprit. Wet clutches work much better with m/c specific oil. I have EBC springs in the 79 and non OE stockers in the 82. Never measured them. As for replacing only a few warped steels I prefer to change clutch 'packages' instead of piece by piece. Never had a slipping problem. Amsoil synth in the 82 and Valvoline m/c specific dino oil in the 79.

I went through the clutch adjustment again, second-guessing myself. I will change out the oil, using m/c specific, and check back. Thank you for your help Terry.

Musta had the clutch adjusted a bit too tight. Went thru the procedure, and backed the adjuster on the engine off a half turn from closed, then set the rest up, and no more slip!
