Real Oil Capacity

Post by BASTOK »

Hi everybody.

Yesterday I change the oil in my '80 CBX, and I used 4.5 Lts.

I start the engine, in order to move the oil to other parts and then I only need to refill a little bit.

Why the manual says 5.5 Lts ??? Today I check the level and it's where it should.

Thanks for your answers!

Did you change the filter? There will always be a little oil left when you change. Filling a dry crankcase will require more oil than during a change, although a whole liter seems to be on the high side.

Yes EMS, I do change the oil filter.

I was with the mechanic.

The precedure was...:

- Unsecrew the bolt at bottom of the bike, until all the oil drain.
- Put the engine switch OFF and press start button few sec to drain more.
- Then take out the old filter and put the new one.
- Fill with new oil
- Press start button few seconds to refil
- Start the engine 2 minutes and review the oil level
- Refill only a little more.

Then I drive for 15 miles and recheck the level and was OK.

Did you notice something bad in the procedure or it's only what you said about the old oil in some parts of the engine.

Thanks! (sorry about my english ;-) )

That is all my 80 ever took about 4.5 4.75 lts.
Did you put it on the sidestand for a couple of min. before draining? You will get a little bit extra that way from around the cams.

while mine is draining, I lean the bike left and right. There is a lot of oil in the cylinder head on both sides. The best way to see how much is there, next time you change it, empty the drain pan after the oil stops draining and then tilt the bike to see how much more you get. Turning the engine over does not get the oil in the head.

I also drain the oil while on the side stand. makes it easier to lean left and right. For filling I put it on the center stand.

Hi George

My CBX was never super sensitive to the oil level. On intense sport rides it would go through a quart in no time so it was nice to have 5+ quarts in there to start out the ride.

My point is you want to get oil level as right as possible on the oil change but it does not have to be micromanaged/monitored every 5 minutes you ride like some owners who ride their Xs a 100 miles per year now think is mandatory.

I used to overfill my CBX a weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit esp before spirited rides where the X would use some oil. Doing this also seemed to quiet things down a bit.

No high theory bs here on my part.........here is a short video of what the pistons on my X looked like after 100k miles and the first time the cylinder had ever been removed!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_u-D4vfUjw

I used Mobil 1 15/45 car oil since it was introduced which helped with the results in the video and also seemed to improve shifting. I did get a small bit of weeping in a few gaskets after starting to use Mobil 1, but being that I never maintained my CBX up to this lines standards or anyones standards since it was new ...that could have been the cause.

Let us all know how it turns out.

I have 13 row stacked plate oil coolers on most of my CBX's and get close to 6 quarts in them.

Used (1) complete 4L jug and filled it to the top. I am stock cap & I changed the filter and tilted left & right! I'll triple check after seeing these posts. Oil was about 90F.

Used 20W50 4-stoke Castrol oil and it needs more effort to engage the trans.
