starter removal problems....

Post by steve murdoch icoa #5322 »

Having searched through past questions about starter removal, i did not find a specific enough answer. The chain guide is preventing the removal. Do i have to remove the lower rear engine mounting bolt or maybe remove the chain guide tab itself with a Dremel tool?

Reading this back to myself this sounds confusing even to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Terry.

I got the starter out, put the other one in , changed the starter relay, checked all connections and fully charged the battery. The problem remains.

The starter will engage sometimes and not at all at times. It will even crank the engine for two seconds and then cut out. No rhyme or reason as when or how it will work.

Any thoughts?

Sorry to say I do, the starter clutch, yes, that's right, the CBX has THREE clutches!!! The one that's probably the culprit is mounted on the crankshaft and requires a disassemble to get at it for a fix. My 82 has a similar problem but only if I haven't started it in weeks or, if its real cold outside. Some say the kind of oil used may contribute to this condition and I do use Amsoil synthetic in it. My 82 has all other things renewed or changed and it still acts like the solenoid is bad, like an old car's starter. No probs with my 79 which has nearly 50K on it but it has never had synthetic oil in it. Try an oil change? Good luck!
