"Parts is Parts" the late Frank Purdue

Post by retrex »

Hi all, I am curious as to engine parts interchange compatibility between the the early and later Xs. Specifically can you swap the heads, jugs, crank, rods and pistons between the two? If so are they direct bolt ons or is some fab work required?

Interchangeability

The crank, rods & pistons are a straight across swap.

The jugs and head may need some modifications. The difference is the '81/'82 jugs and head had larger diameter studs in the middle. You can use them on a '79/'80. If you want to use a '79/'80 head or jugs on a '81/'82 you will need to have the 4 middle holes drilled out larger. It can be done by the average home mechanic with a drill press.

Cheers, Tom
