cbx1000z cam shaft issues

Post by phillcbxuk »

Hi All,
I wonder if anyone can help me as ive think I had cocked up.

I have just rebuilt my cbx trike ( sorry ) when I put the 4 cams back in I decided to check another cbx head I had to see if the cam shafts were better than my originals as they had a bit of wear, and 2 of them looked better so I swopped them ( I cant remember which 2 I changed ) ops.... however when I started her she was quite noisy more than before the build.

I now know the cams are line bored so I think this is the problem, so my question is how can I tell which cams are the original engine ones as I still have all 8 are there marks on them to define a matched set of 4 ? is there any other way of telling ?

I have the other cylinder head on a bench so can use that one to trial the cams and process of elimination will tell me which ones I need to swop back.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions to get me out of this cock up,
The spare cylinder head I bought complete is no good as corroded badly but also unsure if its the Z or Prolink model and are the cams the same for both models ?
If it wasn't a trike I would take it to a bike shop...........

Any help would be great guys, really cocked up here.... :sad-roulette:

Regards Phill

I don’t believe they are a matched sets. Just make sure you are putting intake cams where they go and exhaust the same. They are marked.in,ex. I would plastigauge all cam caps also. Good luck on your venture. We have all been there.

There are 3 different versions of the intake cams and 2 versions of the exhaust. Any will physically bolt in fine as Terry said. You need to measure lobe height to determine what you have. But as Terry also said, you might have some mixed up. And be sure you have the correct service manual that shows the correct installation of the cams. Both #1 and #6 lobes cannot face each other at TDC.

Phill,

Here are the various sizes:

There were three different camshaft combinations used in the CBX:

1979 lift
in 8.3 mm
ex 7.5 mm

1980 lift
in 7.8 mm
ex 7.0 mm

1981/82 lift
in 8.0 mm
ex 7.5 mm

Intake is different in all three combinations. Exhaust is the same in 1979, 1981 and 1982. 1980 is different.

But you really need the lobe measurements.

'79 - IN - 37.3-37.46mm min 37.2
EX - 37.5-37.66mm min 37.4

'80 - IN - 36.8-37.06mm min 36.7
EX - 36.8-37.16mm min 36.7

'81 - IN - 37.00-37.16mm min 36.9
'82 - EX - 37.5-37.66mm min 37.4

As you see, the exhaust cams for the '79 and the Pro-Link are identical. In my experience, any used cam you find will measure at the very low end of these measurements and is no cause for concern. Plastigauging the bearing clearances is much more important.
